D&D 3E/3.5 Githyanki - Not as a Favored Enemy in 3.5?

Sorry to bump an old thread, but this is a misunderstanding of how the extraplanar subtype works.

Basically, the thing to remember is that, in the immortal words of Eric B and Rakim "it's not where your from, it's where you're at".

Make sense?

Perhaps you misunderstood me. I was not trying to say how the extra-planer subtype works in general. What I was saying is change how it works just for a rangers favored enemy. This would make sense to me, as no matter where you go, you still hate/ know how to hunt/trick/kill your hated species just as well. In this case only (not for determining spells/etc.) I would say it would make sense to change how you calculate what is extra-planar, so the Ranger could hate Githyanki.

Of course, the Banish spell/ etc would work the way you said.

In my humble opinion, sometimes you have to tweak the rules to make sense.

That doesn't solve the fact that making any kind of extraplanar subtype a favoured enemy doesn't make any sense!

Uh, right... that's a "situational" tag.

The appropriate favored enemy tag is Humanoid (Human).

That would be a mistake. Extraplanar is a situational subtype. A human from the prime material plane in Mechanus is extraplanar. A fiendish elf from the Abyss on Oerth is extraplanar.

Humanoid (Githyanki) would be more appropriate, IMO.

Good point. But unless you're running the Gith Invasion campaign from Dragon choosing 'Humanoid(Gith)' is just a little too narrow as a favored enemy choice.

Ok, I see what you're saying now. Yeah I can see that.

Of course I still think that if a player wants to be able to focus on githyanki, then humanoids (gith) works. Plus the explanation of favoured enemies (anatomy, culture etc) works better with humanoid (gith) (which are after all basically the same race) than it does with humanoid (extraplanar). In fact, I still think that your proposed solution makes less sense both from a RAW sense and a 'sense' sense that using my solution, but it's hardly game brreaking or anything, so it doesn't make any difference what I think!

I agree, but considering that humanoid (gnoll) is a listed choice, apparently narrow choices aren't an issue. The ranger's favored enemy choices should always be taken in consultation with the DM, IMO.
