Given options what would you choose?

In one of my games I decided to have a high powered options 1st level game set in Bastion Press' Wildwood. I allowed high point buy, lots of sources, and options to trade point buy points for free LA or gestalt. It fit with my vision of the Oathbound world as high powered and drawing in stuff from other worlds to create a big D&D option appropriate arena.

Of the the five players who have been in the game so far the breakdown has been as follows:

1 human ranger
2 human gestalt soulknife/hexblade
3 lizardman gestalt racial HD lizardman/barbarian
4 Illonis (LA race from Mythic Races) sorcerer
5 human gestalt cleric knight

So one race outside of core, one from the MM, and three humans. Two LA characters. Three gestalt and two straight class. Class options that were picked came from core, XPH, CW, PHII, and Throwing Dice game's Character Customization.

Given the opportunity to play different things and have them make sense in the setting I expected more wierd race and class stuff from third party sources to be chosen.

Here were the point buy guidelines I used:

1st level and default 48 point buy.

Optional starting point buy and LA variations:

Option two 56 point buy: Can increase point buy to 56 if restrict class options to NPC classes only.

Option three 48 point buy alternative: LA +1 race restricted to NPC classes.

Option four 40 point buy: LA +2 race restricted to NPC classes. LA +1. Alternatively can take gestalt option with one class required to be an NPC class.

Option Five 32 point buy: Can take an LA +3 race restricted to NPC classes. LA +2 race. LA +1 race Gestalt with NPC class. Or Gestalt.

Option six 24 point buy: LA +4 restricted to NPC class. LA +3. LA +2 Gestalt with NPC class. LA +1 Gestalt.

So given these options and the fact that a character could come from most any world what would you have wanted to make if you were going to play in the game?

I'd go for either a human Gestalt Monk/Sorcerer (AC and spells hey!), or a human Gestalt Monk/Fighter (the ultimate martial artist). I like Gestalt. :)

Or I'd do something from Arcana Unearthed. :)

32 point buy Gestalt is the best choice there.

An excellent choice would be Druid // Rogue (no PrCs needed here). Take low Str, high Wis, moderate everything else.

Another excellent choice would be Ranger // Wizard (take the Archery path) or Ranger // Psion (Telepath or Nomad, and again, Archery path). Low Str, high Int, moderate everything else.

Since you can never, ever, ever have too many Clerics, you could also consider playing one of those... perhaps a Barbarian // Cleric (of Kord) to complement (and insult) the Knight//Cleric, or a Scout // Cleric (of Fharlanghan) for all sorts of occasions.

If you're feeling more martial, a Psychic Warrior // Ranger would be totally awesome. Take TWF path and buff your way to pwnage.

32 point buy gestalt, LA +0 race.

Class? Hmm. Couple ideas that've been kinda knocking around my head. Particularly if some of the options from UA are available, (Urban) Ranger // Beguiler could be fun. Knight // Psion, (Cloistered) Cleric // Psion, or Rogue // Sorcerer maybe.

Oh! Maybe not over the top powerful, but damn fun would be a Bard // Druid. Real archtypical mysterious wanderer type.

If Tome of Magic were available, a half-orc Barbarian // Binder that pacts with totemic and ancestor hero spirits would be pretty cool too.

24 point buy neogi (from Lords of Madness) wilder.

Any umber hulks in wildwood ......... ?

Or 32 point buy gestalt human ranger / druid with vow of poverty

A 32 point LA +1 gestalt Psion // NPC Warrior would have some potential.

Compared to a 32-pt Human Egoist // Barbarian? Or a 32-pt Dwarf Fighter // Shaper? Or a 32-pt Gnome Ranger // Telepath? No way. :)

Here's a fun concept I've been tossing around in my head:

32-pt. Human Sorcerer // Dragon Shaman. Take all levels of Dragon Shaman. Blue is useful, as are some of the good dragons. For your spells, take things that apply to your breath weapon, and take a couple of metabreath feats from the Draconomicon. (You gain a breath weapon at level 4, so start taking spells to augment it at and after that level.)

Cheers, -- N

With the Tome of Battle allowed I think I'd have gone for a 32pt gestalt Crusader/Knight. The Ultimate Tank.

Otherwhise gestalt Barbarian/Ninja (talk about unexpected synergy).
