Giving more feats ?

Like you, I prefer feats to PrC, and I would have loved less classes and even more flexibility.
If you look into a PrC, you see that there is a feat-like ability per level, usually.
What about developping your own PrC, just barebone ones, without special abilities but selectable feats instead?
You just need 4 imho: one with HP=D4 and arcane spell progression, one with D6 and lots of skills, etc... you get the idea.
This way you can customize the number and type of feat you give per PC type.

As a side note, I think that it makes sense to play single class PC wizards, clerics etc... but it is not so for the fighter. It would be interesting to make a poll to see the proportion of single class high level PCs.

I already told you I like it! ;) But it is too complex for most of my players, and is more of a class building system. I would have liked a 4 class system with more customization like the fighter for instance.

No PrCs, what would the world be like if... AAAAAAAAA!!

I love PrCs, if theres a campaign without em, I probably wouldn't play it, even if I did get extra feats.

I might, if I got my super-fantastic-ultra-cheap-super-amounts-of-sneak-attack-damage-and-other-types-of-death-rouge, but I still probably wouldn't

If you guys don't know what I mean by the super-fantastic-ultra-cheap-super-amounts-of-sneak-attack-damage-and-other-types-of-death-rouge, check out the "ten best feats" thread, i forget where it is. Check my post, and add a couple more feats, and there's my super-fantastic-ultra-cheap-super-amounts-of-sneak-attack-damage-and-other-types-of-death-rouge. :D

Here is what I do:

At 4th level, instead of increasing an ability score by 1 point, a PC can instead gain a Feat.

I would probably not allow this two times in a row. If you took a Feat at 4th instead of the ability increase, you cannot do it again at 8th, but could do it again at 12th.

I Wish....for feats

This is kinda a side note to the feats idea. I had a wizard in my campaign who asked can I wish for a feat. I thought abou it, you can wish for higher stats, bring back the dead, just about anything else ...so yes. He was all excited as he said I will trade a level (20000xp) at the time for four good feats. I decided that while he should be able to get the feats since logically it made sense. I could quickly see that this would be a problem. So I implemented the rule that one could not recieve a feat more often than once a game year. That would slow it down so that it was not unbalancing. The reasoning getting a "free" feat beyond what you normally got took some period of time to intergrate, since in theory you normally work toward your feats normally

Just thought I would throw that out in case someone is running a high level, just so PC's don't surprise you with it.

Personally I'm against using Wish to gain any straight game mechanic ability (stat, Feat, etc.). Reason is, if someone says "I'm a 20th level Wizard" I want to be able to know, powerwise, what that means. If they've given themselves a +5 inherent bonus to each stat and Wished for a half-dozen Feats they may still be 20th level, but they're WAY ahead of the curve powerwise.

Realistically everyone should gain XP, etc. as if they were the level they would have been if they hadn't spent any XP (i.e., you can be level 20, or you can be level 18 with 39000 extra XP to spend on Wishes and making magic items), but that's a bookkeeping headache.

As to the original topic, adding more Feats is probably fine overall; it was always a bit strange that everyone only got a total of 7-8 abilities over their entire career (I don't count Epic levels), but on the other hand giving everyone more reduces individuality. I mean, it's no fun if every single level 10 fighter has Power Attack, Combat Reflexes, Cleave, Dodge, Mobility, Spring Attack, Weapon Focus, and Weapon Specialization. Part of the fun was always figuring out what type of abilities the enemy had, and if you give them too many Feats they'll just have them all.
With the splatbooks you have a bit more selection, but they have some balance headaches of their own.
