Giving RPG Products for Christmas?

MadMaxim

First Post
It just dawned on me that Christmas is just around the corner, and I started wondering. Do any of you give RPG products like D&D as presents? Nobody in my family plays RPGs but they play other more traditional games. I never got any RPG products for Christmas either, not because my parents are against RPGs, but I figure they never went looking for any. I'm not looking for advice to get my family to start playing RPGs but just hearing whether any of you are giving (or perhaps receiving) RPG products as Christmas presents :)

I have both given and recieved. Recieved from both the other couple in our gaming group and from family who like the concept of an Amazon Wish List. Given to both to people in our group and a brother-in-law who is kinda into DnD, or at least nostalgic for it.

I would think the starter kit might be a good "board game" type gift.

Otherwise you almost need to make sure a book is on their "want list" but they aren't planning on getting it themselves, or someone else isn't going to get it for them. It may be a bit easier to get someone who plays and collects miniatures something like that for Xmas, since an extra book is less useful than extra minatures.

RPGNow and DrivetrhuRPG have a neat deal this year. They have a holiday wishlist going. You add stuff to your wishlist, and then there is a form to send it to family and friends to buy stuff for you. They pay and it gets delivered to your address. Makes me feel like a kid again with the old Sears toy catalog... :D

I just gave the gift of D&D tonight. My almost eight-year-old daughter has seen me working on stuff for most of her life, but until now had never played. I decided tonight to get her started, so I busted out the Castles and Crusades books, had her roll up a fighter, and took her through a short dungeon. Four hours later she had single handedly (and without and die fudging on my part) taken out eight orcs, one troll, and one ogre, effectively putting an end to a band that had been threatening the nearby roadway. She had an absolute blast and really wants to play again. When I asked her if she wants her own C&C Player's Handbook, she was all excited about the idea, so I told her that I'd get one for her and maybe next time we'd get her mom to play too. You can't fake that kind of excitement, and it's great to know that I just got one of my own into the hobby.

I suppose that also means that I'm going to have to keep an eye on my bookshelves now to make sure she's not running off with the goods behind my back. ;)

Pure win, Darrin.

I don't tend to give or receive gaming goods much, in general. Not for Christmas at least. Though I am still hunting for a particularly awesome dice pouch for someone, as I might have (subtly) hinted at, quite recently. . .

But sure, I would love one of the following, oh Santa: Warriors & Warlocks (for M&M); A Song of Ice & Fire Roleplaying.

If they come out before the end of the year, that is. . . :-S But well, I'll accept them as late presents. ;)

I have gotten for Christmas (or Birthday); Vampire: The Reqiuemn, WoD Corebook, Changeling: The Lost.

I plan on giving a friend for Christmas this year the Werewolf: The Forsaken Corebook.

The first rpg book I ever received was Races of Stone. That same year my parents also funded travel and accomadation expenses for my first trip to GenCon for the following year ('05).

This year I'm getting Babylon 5: Faith Manages & Star Wars Saga Edition.
