Seduced by a beautiful woman, Calmet did not really care that she turned out to be an erinyes in the service of the archdevil Dispater. Eager for the power that she promised, Calmet eagerly embraced the worship of the Iron Duke. The requirement that he sacrifice an intelligent being upon an iron altar before entering Dispater’s favor turned out to be only the first of many.
Already a popular gladiator, Calmet used his influence and popularity to start a thriving underground cult that now has dozens of members, and is growing larger and stronger as his reputation grows.

Calmet’s consort, the erinyes Perzelline, gifted him with a terrible weapon: A huge bastard sword named “Ironheart”. Gladiators in arenas across the Empire have come to fear this great weapon, as Calmet has gained more than just regional fame in his travels. This in fact, is part of Perzelline’s master plan to proliferate the veneration of Dispater, as she is constantly recruiting for new cult leaders on these journeys.

Calmet is quite an imposing figure with his closed helmet, dark skin, spiked armor, and the fear inducing Ironheart. As if that weren’t enough to scare an opponent, he also enters the arena with the gruesome decapitated heads of his defeated grudge match victims tied to his belt.

Signature Move: Calmet likes to tease and frustrate his opponents by grabbing their metal weapons or armor and turning them into rusted, worthless scraps.

We had our second Gladiator campaign session on Thursday, and we had a lot of fun - Thanks dkoz! There were 6 of us there - 4 players, dkoz, and Fulcan helped roleplay the NPC's.

The newest gladiator stable, the Phoenix Company is growing, and is now comprised of: Courn (above), Forlorne (Human Fighter), Hemidu (dwarf fighter), Gore (a 6th level Minotaur), Oak Arms (human druid), Mister X (above), and Toluk (above).

The manager of the Phoenix company, Arturis, is still refusing to be blackmailed by the large and powerful Tiger Tails, a rival gladitorial stable. Because of this, the leader of the the Tiger Tails, "The Weasel", is using his influence with the arena organizers to create tough draws for the Phoenix Company.

Once again the Phoenix company was a major underdog with Forlorne, Gore, Mister X, and Toluk being pitted against a group of four more experienced gladiators (averaging almost 1 1/2 levels higher!).

We were utilizing a scenario from the first rate module "Bloody Sands of Sicaris" by Paradigm: Capture the flag - A boat is suspended in a sea of levitating water, and each team must attempt to capture each others flags, then place it atop the center mast above the crows nest. 4 points for that, 2 for capturing the flag, 2 for incapacitating an opponent, 1 for killing an opponent - most points win.

Each team started the scenario on opposite platforms about 20' away from the boat. We could swing on ropes to reach the boat, climb on the ropes tied to the boat, or reach the boat magically. Or you could swim - and get eaten by the piranha-like fishes.

This encounter was more than 14 rounds (!), so I won't relate the whole thing. Here are some highlights:

The leader of the Tiger Tails squad, a 9th level fighter, never reached the boat, failing his jump check. Each time he was close to getting into the boat, Toluk would knock him off the ropes and he'd take more damage from the fishies.

The TT's heavy, an Ogre, was sent over to the boat on a floating magical disk by the Tiger Tail's mage. He dished out some major damage before Toluk and Forlorne were able to take him out.

The Tiger Tails Gnoll Barbarian ( who had multiple attacks, and could crit on a 14 ! ) was keeping Mister X, and his wolf companion busy.

Meanwhile, the Phoenix Company was getting pummeled by the TT's mage who just stood on their platform lofting spells at us:
Magic Missle x2, Fireball, Fear x2, Hold Person (?) etc.. (ALL saves were failed too!)

Poor Gore didn't even get to attack until the 10th round or so, and only had 3 HP left when he finally reached their mage. He hit the mage with all his ferocity, and was promptly dropped to -6 HP due to the mages' fire shield. It was a terrific sacrifice, and the break the Phoenix company needed to blow the mage's concentration, and win the day.

Lesson learned: I'ts best to be lucky AND good. But the Phoenix company needs a mage. Or at least some serious ranged attack ability.
