GLEE #3: Acafellas

Fox is running Glee "from the very beginning", so I decided to start discussion threads on the earlier episodes, since I didn't do any the first time around. (I should have started last Thursday, but I didn't about it until last week).

This was the episode where we met the title band. Broadway stars Victor Garber and Deborah Monk (as Mr. Shu's parents) and Josh Groban (who loves a blowsy alcoholic) guest starred, but none of them sang, and neither did Rachel (this was the first episode she didn't). Mercedes got her first solo and we got to see Puck's musical talents for the first time.

The playlist:

Mr. Shu, Coach Tanaka, Howard Bamboo, Sandy, and Henri St. Pierre (the thumbless shop teacher, played by Broadway star John Lloyd Young) sing "For He's a Jolly Good Fellow"

Acafellas (Shu, Tanaka, Howard, and Henri) sing "This Is How We Do It", originally performed by Montell Jordan

Acafellas sings "Poison", originally performed by Bell Biv DeVoe

Vocal Adrenaline sings "Mercy", originally performed by Duffy

Mercedes sings "Bust Your Windows", originally performed by Jazmine Sullivan

Acafellas (Finn, Puck, and Sandy replace Howard and Henri) sings "I Wanna Sex You Up", originally performed by Color Me Badd

My dad saw "Showmance" last weekend and noted that they didn't sound as good as they did later and thought that the cast was deliberately holding back because the glee club was supposed to be bad. I should also note that they relied more on autotuning, the lipsynching was off, and that Cory Montieth was not an accomplished singer but has gotten better over the course of the show.

I hope we'll see the Acafellas again. There was a sort-of reunion in "Funk".
