Globe of Invulnerability Variants

In 1e we played that minor globe of invulnerability moved with the caster. In 3e minor globe of invulnerability is explicitly immobile.

Any suggestions on what level a mobile minor globe of invulnerability should be in 3e? I'm leaning toward 5th; it doesn't seem to deserve a two level bump up since it does strip many of the caster's own defenses (and when we played in 1e, casters were loath to use it for that reason), and is only a 10' radius, but would be interested if there are any particular exploits that would merit a higher level.

How about for a minor globe of invulnerability that is immobile, but can be cast at close range?

First off, the Globe doesn't strip a caster of his defenses; pre-cast effects remain in effect. Although you couldn't cast Protection from Evil on yourself while standing inside a Globe of Invulnerability, that's right.

Mobile globes... I'd say a level higher than the regular version would be fine. Immobile, but castable at close range? The same, I'd say. I can't really come up with any OP comboes for that one, at least not on the fly: since you can easily walk out, or cast through, a Globe, there's no way you could shut down enemy casters even with the ranged version.

Antimagic field is a 6th level spell for wizards and it moves with the caster, so maybe 4th level would be appropriate for a lesser globe of invulnerability that moves with the caster.

In Savage Species the Ghaele gets this as part of its Protective aura at level 10 (7HD) So 4th level seems appropriate for a minor globe that is focused on the castor and moves with them. Its also as a 20' radius on the ghaele at this level too. Just showing an example of something already in place that fits your criteria for why it should be a certain level. Hope it helped.

Savage Species is also one of the most poorly balanced books in the history of 3E.

The Astral Deva, iirc, gets that aura even earlier, like ECL 7. It's horrifically broken. Those same progressions tend to give stuff like flight fairly early and things like Large size at ~ECL 18.

Back on topic...it's definitely at least worth +1 spell level, not sure if it's worth 2. I mean, with Flyby Attack the immobile version basically can suit your purposes just fine anyway.

Thanks for responses. Shows no matter how many times I read the rules, I can manage to miss something. I need to pull out my 1e PHB to see if we misunderstood it bitd.

Old-fashioned minor globe of invulnerability
Level: ?
Duration: 1 round/level
This spell functions like anti-magic field, except that the duration is 1 round/level and only spells and spell-like abilities of 3rd level and lower are affected.

Edit: still not sure if that captures it - I seem to recall some debate on whether anti-magic field blocks line of effect in 3e. If anti-magic field blocks line of effect, then "are affected, and the globe does not block line of effect".
