Glove of Storing and the Holy Sword Spell

Kazoo

First Post
Exerpt from the magic item Glove of Storing:
The item is held in stasis and shrunk down so small within the palm of the glove that it cannot be seen. Many owners of gloves of storing find them to be useful and dramatic ways to store weapons, wands, and-because the item is stored in stasis-even lit torches.

If it can store a torch in stasis, could my Paladin cast the spell "Holy Sword" on his weapon and store it in the glove. Then retrieve the sword "with a snap of his finger" a week later and still have the spell active?

I'd say 'no' because of the clause in the Holy Sword description :"The spell is automatically canceled 1 round after the weapon leaves the character's hand for any reason."

It's a tricky issue. Does stasis affect magical effects?

Leads to some nasty things, like holding onto the pellet of a Delayed Blast Fireball.

I don't think you can do that for the following reason:

It is possible to travel on a plane where time cease to affect you and you can't age. Astral plane comes to mind. Yet even in those planes, spells still have a finite duration.

For this reason I don't think that you can suspend a spell in a glove of storing.

Furthermore, I believe that if the glove of storing was intended to be used in the way that you propose, it would have been specifically stated in the item's description.

Do torches not burn on the Astral plane??

The only reason I would think it would work is because of the torch example they give. Does Time Stop pause spell durations?

I like your thinking.

Surprisingly, you CAN store the enspelled sword under RAW since Gloves of Storing are constructed using the Shrink Item spell which specifically states "You are able to shrink one nonmagical item".

However the SRD's description for Gloves of Storing specifically states the Holy Sword duration would NOT be affected and the sword would automatically reappears when the effect expires.

"This device is a simple leather glove. On command, one item held in the hand wearing the glove disappears. The item can weigh no more than 20 pounds and must be able to be held in one hand. While stored, the item has negligible weight. With a snap of the fingers wearing the glove, the item reappears. A glove can only store one item at a time. Storing or retrieving the item is a free action. The item is held in stasis and shrunk down so small within the palm of the glove that it cannot be seen. Spell durations are not suppressed, but continue to expire. If an effect is suppressed or dispelled, the stored item appears instantly. Faint transmutation; CL 6th; Craft Wondrous Item, shrink item; Price 10,000 gp (one glove)." Wondrous Items :: d20srd.org

It doesn't seem worth the effort/bother, but one possible work-around would be to:
1. apply Holy Sword/etc to your desired weapon to be stored
2. apply Animate Object to change its Type to "Construct" (artificial creature)
3. apply Temporal Stasis to permanently extend the preexisting spell effects and change the Construct back into an Item/Object so you can
4. finally, use the Gloves of Storing (which only stores Items/Objects)

Note, this convolution works bc WOTC held Dragon/Dungeon were part of the RAW so although Temporal Stasis doesn't specify the duration of preexisting spell effects are extended, Pazio indicated they are in "The Mud Sorcerer's Tomb" (Dungeon #138) by having their villain apply several spell's prior to his Temporal Stasis with the implication/understanding those preexisting spells would be in effect upon his release.
