Gno more gnomes?

I saw on another forum that gnomes aren't going to be in 4th Edition. Is that confirmed or a rumor? And if it's true, what was the reasoning behind it?

There was a designer who said that we'd be losing at least one race in the PHB. The Tiefling is going to be core, but the gnome and the half orc need to watch their backs.

There's no official announcement as to the which one it is, but most people are betting on the gnome, since we don't really need two small races.

Not that I'm a huge fan of gnomes, but tieflings? They may as well throw in drow as a core race while they're at it.

(Thanks for the response!)

Whoever they cut though will be added back officially i think in the PH2 the following year. Or maybe in the MM, or online through Dragon. Regardless, they're not really "gone", just initially absent.

Keeping my fingers crossed that they do just that!

(provided they redesign the drow to be a little more interesting to play, of course).

BTW, anyone remember that old Nodwick in Dragon, where it turned out that halflings, gnomes and dwarves are the same race, just with fake beards etc..

The reasoning was that some gygax dude had paid one short race money for sourcebooking them, so the same race decided to make it triple!

I'm hoping that when gnomes hit 4th edition they go back their big nosed 1st edition vibe.

I still love that picture of Garl in the 1st edition Deities&Demigods.

Just because they don't give a race "official" space in the PHB doesn't mean you can't still play it...

Unless you happen to play with a GM who only allows "official" "core" stuff, of course.

I wouldn't like to play with a GM who only allows "official" "core" stuff.

But even then, you could play a Gnome using, for exemple, halfling stats and Gnome culture and background. Far from perfect, but not too bad.

And if your GM forbids that too... maybe it's the time to change GM or take the DM's mantle yourself... :)
