Yes, it's official: The 4e PHB will have no "Gnome" race. That's because after years of incessant whining about gnomes being too wimpy, they're getting a complete makeover, which will be reflected in the name.
The new race will do away with the silent g and replace it with a silent k. The Knomes will be real bastards on a battlefield, and smart bastards to boot.
As the name "gnome" comes from "gnosis", "knome" will reflect "knowledge". Bardic Knowledge, which was just lying around after the bard was being let go, will become knomisch racial ability, and will have added kombat application. A Knome will always have the chance to know some of the enemy's weaknesses, and not only get information about what weakest saving throw or energy least resistant against, but also bonuses not unlike a ranger's favourite enemy.
They will also get huge bonuses on kraft checks to build kannons, a knomish invention that makes them a terrible force of destruktion.
