No Gnomes. Dwarves do the tinkering since they can survive Research & Development. Skaven{ratmen] get the small critter slot in place of halfling

I know I'm boring, but I loooove the techno-gnomes. Give me a gnome witha repeating xbow and a steam-powered chainsaw and I'm happy as a pig in Miller Lite.

I chose "steampunk tinkers and artificers," but that's not quite how I work them. It's more like, each and every one of them, deep down, is Leonardo DaVinci. Renaissance men, one and all. They all have this drive to comprehend the world, and it drives them to experiment, muck about with stuff, invent things, and just generally figure out what makes reality tick. A gnome might build a windmill, or a water-driven seed-spreader, or an Archimedes' screw. But everything he does is infused with a raw sense of wonder at how freakin' amazing stuff really is when you get down to the nitty gritty of it.
Your gnomes win. :D

In fact, I think you just redefined the gnome for me.

I don't really have gnomes - just a generic littlefolk race, since I once had a player that ruined gnomes for everyone. But, the littlefolk tend to be tinkers/engineers/artificers - as well as being deeply involved (as a general rule) in organized crime.

in the campaign i play in gnomes are exactly as in the PHB and are rarely taken as a PC race.

in the homebrew i made and DM gnomes are a corsair race from another continent to that on which the campaign takes place. They are the only race with firearms (using the DMG rules nothing clever) and have only one small coastal settlement on the human dominated continent but whenever a party visits other coastal cities there is a chance they'll encounter gnome raiding parties intent on gutting the city.

Rogue is favoured class, dread piret (sp) freatures on the list of allowed PrCs and players are encouraged to "argh me hearties" as much as they like. ONly one gnome has been played so far who was a beer swigging, dual pistol weilding corsair played well enough so that the comic effect was not his primary appeal, great players = great campaign

Fingers
