Go ahead and get the Exotic Weapon feat

That's not a katana; that's a red ninja sword. I should know, because I got one at GenCon for $15. It is nice to know that I shouldn't be whacking it against the table though.

Close, but not quite - they use a foldover method that creates hundred of thousands of layers (geometric progression). Damascus steel was strong because of its refinement process, not a folding technique.

And even well made katanas can break if banged at a bad angle against a strong object.

But, yeah, bad knockoffs shouldn't be used to hit anything.

That's true of any sword. None should be used as a club, even a well made, heavy sword can snap just like that.

The funny thing is that a badly made heavy sword forged of a low grade steel won't. It bends instead.

Yeah, but they are more likely to break in normal use. :) That and most of them are so dull you're more likely to kill someone by clubing them with the flat of the blade instead.
