Gods and Pantheons

How important are gods in your campaign?

  • Extremely - The characters are gods themselves, with story arcs that involve other gods.

    Votes: 5 5.4%
  • Very - I have a detailed pantheon, and the gods interact with the PCs frequently.

    Votes: 16 17.2%
  • Fairly - Many adventures focus on religious themes, but the gods aren't NPCs per-se.

    Votes: 45 48.4%
  • Not Really - There might be a church or two, but for the most part the gods aren't seen or heard.

    Votes: 15 16.1%
  • Not At All: the gods are distant, have no churches, and have little concern for mortals.

    Votes: 0 0.0%
  • Non-Existant - My game world does not have gods at all. Divine magic comes from somewhere else.

How important are the gods in your game?

I'm developing a new adventure campaign, and I'm at the point where I need to decide how important to make religion. I'm curious to see how important religion, the gods, churches, and so forth are in other game worlds.

You don't have a good poll option for me. I voted "extremely," but the pcs aren't all gods; a few of them are trying to become gods, or are self-declared gods, but nobody is an actual deity. Nonetheless, the gods are a central fixture of the game, and actual deities have been involved... and, as I said, there are several pcs trying to become gods. :)

Like the first two responders:

You can have religion and gods be important without active gods, and;

You can have active gods, at least in theory, without things like churches, religion, etc. being important.

Yeah, this poll is worded weirdly.

I was going to say "Extremely" - but the PCs are not gods themselves, nor do they ever appear as NPCs. But to say "Fairly" seems inaccurate - because it is more than "fairly".

The thing about gods is their influence can be far-reaching without ever showing their hand. :)

I can't answer. I'd say between very and extremely, but the PCs don't even know the reality of the gods -- they do not interact much, and they are certainly not gods themselves! (Though one is on his way.)

Cheers, -- N

Yeah, they all are. ;) I keep forgetting to always include an option for "Other," because there is always an option that I never thought of. Sorry about that.

What el remmen said. In my homebrew, I have a detailed pantheon and the choice of deity is much more important in a cleric's choice of spells than in standard D&D. Also, the rogue has actually met his deity. However, other than the one instance, encountering deities has been non-existant (unless one dies). Furthermore, the players are not seeking for their characters to become gods.
