I knew that it had received a lot of hype, but I was still surprised at just how good it was! I'm not even a fan of kaiju movies, but this absolutely knocked my socks off...

My wife affirmatively dislikes* Kaiju movies. She loved this one.

*: Our son loves them, so her opinion on this is, sadly, quite well-informed.

I already got that from the scene before he took off. It was telegraphed pretty heavily.

Not so heavily in the original Japanese. After explaining how to prime the bomb, Tachibana says, “Having done that,” or “After that,” and then they cut to the wide. The transition was very smooth. Having seen the German on the seat, I thought, “Perhaps ejection seat?” Possibly even that the pull-knob was actually the ejection seat trigger. But nothing was certain.

The subtitles translate it as, “And one more thing,” which, when combined with the cut to the wide shot, was a big neon sign for an ejection seat.

Saw this in the theaters, Japanese with English subtitles (which is how I prefer to watch Japanese films and TV). I loved it. Most of the time in Godzilla films, I hate the human parts and only like the monster parts (I'm a simple man). This film however, really kept me engaged with the human story.

We first see Godzilla rampaging through Japan, then Columbo has to prove how he did it.

I watched it with my Dad with dubs because I do not think he can handle subs very well in his condition. He approved of it, which is a good endorsement to me. As I said to him it basically a real movie that also happens to feature a giant lizard.

Unlike the Hollywood movies, this was a film with something to say (beyond give us your money and turn off your brain).

Mostly, it was about survivor guilt, the monster was incidental.

Not just survivor's guilt, but actively grappling with cowardice.
