Golgordand's Gauntlet

I got run through this adventure earlier in the campaign I'm playing in and loved/hated it. I've been a DM for so long you would think I could handle some simple puzzles, but other than the Minesweeper mini-game, I got my characters arses handed to me! It was some wonderfully agonizing fun! I had not had to figure out puzzles like that in a long time, let me tell you.

I played 3 characters and the DM had one character and we were lucky to make it out I think. My cleric and my monk/fighter both got burned up/transported away on the stairs and let just say that my dwarven cleric did not enjoy waking up completely shaved!! :p He had to walk around fully covered up for a couple months before his beard got started growing again. It was TORTURE! :D

All in all a really fun adventure that makes you use your brain some to go along with the little bit of fighting. On a side note, my fighter just recently learned just what the Hoardmaster can do and now he wants to get a Bag of Holding filled with copper pieces to dump out just to use that 'special' power! ;)

What dungeon issue was Challenege of the Champions 1 in? Any other adventures y'all know about that are similar?

I find these types of adventures are the perfect way to lure unsuspecting virgin D&D player's into the fold....see, it's not about hack and slash geekyness, this is all about thinking ...muh hahahahaha

The original "Challenge of Champions" was published in Dungeon #58. It was my first published adventure...ah, the memories.

I should point out that the first three Challenges of Champions were designed using the AD&D 2nd Edition rules, but for the most part they shouldn't be too difficult to convert over to 3E, especially if you use "CoC IV" as a pattern. "CoC III" does require the use of the old 2nd Edition Monstrous Manual for one scenario, so you might have to do some heavy tweaking to that scenario if you don't have that book. (You can't just use the 3E Monster Manual, because it doesn't have info on some of the molds, slimes, and fungus that appear in the scenario.)

As far as similar adventures, you might want to try Mike Shel's "The Mud Sorcerer's Tomb" from Dungeon #37, Coby W. Hedberg's "Deadly Treasure" from Dungeon #41, or Rick Maffei's "Training Ground" from Dungeon #67. Also, Paul F. Culotta's "Operation Manta Ray" in Dungeon #66 is a pirate-based adventure, and part of the process of infiltrating the pirates sends the PCs through a series of ten (ten? I think ten) scenarios built like an obstacle course or a Challenge of Champions with a nautical/pirate theme. These adventures also require conversion to 3E, as they were all written for previous editions of the game.

There are probably more, but these were the first ones that came to my head.

Hey, look what I found! I checked out a link from Monte Cook's site, which led to the Dungeons and Dragons Adventures website, which has a TON of adventures available! Among them, I found "Gorgoldand's Gauntlet," for those of you trying to find a copy of it somewhere.

Here's the link: www.dndadventure.com

On the left side of the main screen is a list; click on "Adventures," then scroll down to the bottom of that screen and click on "Adventures: up to 4th." That leads to a (somewhat) alphabetical listing. "Gorgoldand's Gauntlet" is a 536 Kb ZIP file.

Or, this should take you straight there: http://www.dndadventure.com/html/adventures/adv1.html

While you're there, check out all of the other stuff they've got -- it looks pretty extensive! (Over 300 adventures, for one thing!)

Having typed Gorgoland's Gauntlet into my own personal module a couple of months ago by hand, I'm going to go shoot myself now...

Nice find! Cool site.

Thanks for the link!

BTW, our group made it through the Gauntlet intact, although one of the puzzles did stump us for longer than I would have expected :) .

If anyone is interested, you can see the campaign logs of one of my players who went through a heavily modified Gauntlet (though I'm not sure if most of it will be recognizable to y'all). They are titled:

Chapter One. 'Did you bring, um, you know, protection?' part one or 'Mykoth Breaks Doors' - 2/4/02

and

Chapter Two. 'Did you bring, um, you know, protection?' part two
or 'Mykoth Meets a Turtle'

The turtles were the rust monsters...

I know I prefer my players not getting that many weapons of that power at that level. They certainly hated me when I told them that the weapons disappeared...
