Goliaths

Hello, first time on the ENWORLD furoms. I tried looking for a search function for the forums but could not find one. So I go here to ask, what do you guys think of the Goliath race out of the Races of Stone supplement? Stats, builds, anything?

They're the new race from the "Races of..." series that I like the most, but I haven't used one yet in my game. (They don't quite fit with the more civilised areas I've been running adventures in).

Cheers!

I think they are a ton of fun, and beg for a racial paragon class (ala Unearthed Arcana and Arcana Unearthed).

And they look good to boot! :)

Mechanically, I like Goliaths a whole lot more than Half-Giants (Expanded Psionics Handbook). Unfortunately, I haven't been able to play one or have one as an NPC in any of my campaigns, but I would gladly include them in any way possible. I think they're all-round cool.

EDIT: And welcome to EN World! I hope you'll enjoy your stay.

I have a goliath PC in the Scarred Lands campaign I run. It's a cool race, and the player is going to develop a racial prestige class. I think the racial modifier is low, I don't think any other race has as many advantages. The 'gain all advantages' of being large without the drawbacks is quite powerful combined with combat actions like trip, disarm, sunder, etc. The racial ability modifiers are great for fighter types. The jump and climb skill advantages are quite useful.

I once played a Goliath gladiator. His schtick in the arena was durability.

I started out with a high constitution and a Barbarian/Fighter mix, took 3 levels of Dwarf (Duergar, actually, which had no mechanical changes) Stoneblessed, and then went into Deepwarden.

He wore Gnomish Twistcloth armor, which doesn't look like much protection at all, and then used his huge Constitution modifier to replace Dex to AC. The Deepwarden doesn't really specify how that trick works, so I explained it as his freakish vitality letting him take serious wounds without even noticing. He actually had a slightly negative Dex modifier, making him as a big hearty guy who happened to break the too-small objects around him by accident.

He was created as an ECL 10 character, and playing him up from level 1 would mean going without the Constitution-to-AC trick for a very long time. I also didn't get to play him for very long, but noticed his comparatively low AC meant he took a lot of damage. Restoring that much damage takes more out of the party healer than a more conventional high-AC type.

No, dwarf stoneblessed - stoneblessed is a prestige class for characters who strongly identify with a "race of stone" and eventually grants the ability to qualify for their racial prestige classes and feats and whatnot. It's meant to be a roleplaying thing - you're an honoured ally and honorary member of the race, and so on.

Ah, I see. I recall that's in Races of Stone, right? Haven't had a chance to read it all.
