Good 3rd Party replacement city for Greyhawk.

First Post
I am running the Paizo Age of Worms Adventure Path, with the party just turning 7th level and now about to head off to Greyhawk for the Hall of Harsh Reflections adventure.

I am going to pad it with some personal touch, bringing the exiled Balabar Smenk back in for a brief scene prior to the Champion's Belt where he will play a bigger role.

I wanted to break things up a bit and use a 3rd party city for Greyhawk instead and I was interested in suggestions.

I am considering using:
  • City State of Invincible Overlord
  • Bard's Gate - with some geography tweaks for Greyhawk
  • Freeport
  • Bluffside
  • Endhome from Lost City of Barakus
  • Durbenford - from Trouble at Durbenford
  • Liberty City - the Game Mechanic's City Quarters series, with Arcane, Temple and Thieves
  • Worlds Largest City
  • Ptolus

or maybe some possible old 3.0 PDF cities from back in the early days, like:

  • Visiria
  • Aten - City of Life
  • A city from a MonkeyGod module

or maybe homebrew bits and pieces from other sources:

  • City Guide - Darkside by DarkQuest Games
  • Foul Locales - Urban Blight
  • CityWorks - FFG
  • EN Publishing Guilds - there's a lot
  • Skeleton Key maps and Adventure Town stuff, even the Ptolus maps

Any thoughts?

I think that Bard's Gate would work well, as would Barnacus (Dragon #80). Barnacus is pretty much my 'go to' city for this kind of thing (though Saltmarsh is assuming that role for coastal cities).

I'll have to look up Barnacus...

I've always used a hash of the Chaosium Sanctuary and TSR Lankhmar cities for my Greyhawk City. I have liberally supplemented these at times with Barnacus (excellent call, James!), Midkemia's Cities and Carse, Gamelords' Haven, and Warhammer's Marienburg, Irillian from White Dwarf, Cities of Harn (and city maps from Harn or MERP in general) and others I'm likely forgetting atm....

Irillian from White Dwarf

Most definitely a city worthy of note and one that will be making an appearance in my Wilderlands campaign at some point in time; although, I have not decided which city it will become in the Wilderlands as of yet ...

You can't go wrong with the Citystate or Bard's Gate, depending on the feel you're looking for. I'm also a big fan of Hollowfast (from the Scarred Lands) as well - a good place to throw some stereotypes on their ears and mess with the players heads. :) IIRC Hollowfast doesn't have a big city map like CSIO or BG, but you could use some of the other resources you mentioned to put one together.

There is also the city of Korvosa from the latest Paizo APCurse of the Crimson Throne. Paizo has also published a "Guide to Korvosa" which I really enjoyed.

In the shared homebrew campaign setting I Co-DM with two other guys Ptolus is Greyhawk 10K years after the Greyhawk setting. The Greyhawk pantheon are the old gods and the cosmopolitan feel and city on the shore matches up well between the two. We made the Vladaams descendents of the Scarlet Brotherhood (a connection made when one of the other DMs put up the Vladaam heraldry).

Kalamar has a great city book that I can't remember the name of. It is very well done and eaily equal to the ones mentioned above.
