Since PCs are supposed to be a cut above, we use the following house rule to ensure decent stats for starting characters:
Player rolls as many columns as needed until s/he gets 2 'good columns', defined as the total adds are 10 or higher unless the column has an 18, where the column is 'good' if the total bonuses are 9 or higher. So 18, 16, 14, 10, 10, 10 would be a good column as would 16, 16, 16, 12, 10, 10.
Of course, the player can take a 'bad' column if s/he wants. 18, 18, 14, 10, 9, 9 is +8 overall but would be hard to turn down!
We roll 4d6, rerolling 1s, and keeping the best 3.
After the player gets 2 good columns, s/he can roll 1 more column.
