I think alignment is a poor substitute for motivations in any system, modern, futuristic or fantasy.

Thats misrepresenting alignment. Having an alignment does not prevent creatures from having motivations. That's a very common anti-alignment argument, as is that having an alignment prevents them from having personalities.

They can still be good or evil without an alignment system, it just won't have any game mechanics effect.

A lot of people hate alignment because they want to play an evil bastard but still think of themselves as the good guy.

That wasn´t the point. The point was, that the terrorists think of themselves as good and expected a sure place in paradise. I personally think they are in for a Welcome-BBQ-party with them as guests of honour in Hell, but that´s beside the point.

It's comforting to think that some people are 'evil', just as it's comforting to think that people are 'good'. It doesn't make it true, however.

For me this thought is deeply uncomfortable. I think that much of the cause searching after a heinious crime stems from the unwillingness to consider the possibility that there are people who are just evil,with nothing to explain it and nothing to prevent that.

Just got round to reading this. It's an interesting piece of polemic, but shouldn't be mistaken for anything else.

This is NOT interesting. This is a galling impertinence, of the likes i have not seen before. It is full of half-truths, offenses, false heroism and out-right lies. Even if i would not be German, i would take this as an insult to my intelligence as a politically interested and educated human.

The United States has heroically supported Israel in the face of almost worldwide condemnation.

The US have paid money, that not very heroic. What world-wide condemnation? There were some people who asked, if the israeli politics were a way to peace. That was constructive criticism.

. But what the world refuses to acknowledge is that without America's help, the Arabs would slaughter the Jews much like the Nazis did. There is no question about this.

We aren´t in the 50´s anymore. No Arab government wants to "drive the jews into the seas" anymore, like in the time before the 6-day-war.

So once again, America is practicing heroism.

It´s practising pragmatisms, because no US-goverment wanted to anger the jewish community by putting any kind of pressure on the israeli government to, for example, honour existing treaties to partly dissolve the settlements in the Gaza-stripe or West-bank.

But the most egregious betrayal of all lies on the doorstep of Germany.

Who did we betry ? The Israelis or more the US by simply disagreeing?

The loathsome Gerhardt Schroeder sold out the United States and Israel by refusing any assistance in the Iraq situation in order to win re-election.

Aside from the fact, that Bush too has election coming, many other leaders expressed doubt on the US politics and criticized it, without elections, because out of very important and existing reasons. I will not say that Schroeder did not ecxaterate the issue, but it was his duty to determine the course of the german goverment.

Of all the people on this earth, the Germans are the ones who should be doing everything possible to help the Jews.

Just that we don´t bragg about it, does not mean we haven´t and will not continue to do so.
And here comes ,not only the beef, but the T-bone-steak:

. They have not repaid the Hitler debt – and show no signs of wanting to do so. It is shameful and cowardly that Schroeder and his followers have once again failed to fulfill their historical obligation to the Jewish people.

The debt of six-million dead can NEVER be paid. But the german society is the only one to have accepted it´s historical guilt. We have not made this easy for ourselves. And i will not say, that there weren´t attempts to forget it or steal out of the responsibility, but we did not. We will never .
