Good GMs at Gen Con?

I only got to play in two table-top games, and went 1 for 2 as far as good GMs go. I also got to do two Larps, and I must say that the Larp on Thursday (The Prince's Diamond Jubilee) blew the Camarilla LARP out of the water. So I guess I was batting .500, not including the pick-up Shadowrun game I ran, which I was told went well.

Slightly off topic: did anybody notice that White Wolf's single gaming event (their two night, 100 player Larp) was scheduled against the White Wolf Party? Now, I wasn't terribly impressed by White Wolf's games, but lord almighty, those guys can throw a party.

I was one with a scotch in each hand that night, by the way.

The GM's I had at Gencon were all quite good.

The three most notable:

Piratecat - despite what his players say, he's actually not half bad. ;)

GM who ran the Savage Worlds "Slipstream" demo: Quite good with picking up our improvised little bits and running with them. Enjoyed describing blood-and-viscera-coated aliens FAR too much to be considered healthy. :)

Guy who ran the AU demo game: Role-plays his NPC's very well. Had a slightly harder time running fights, but he admitted publically that he prefers complex plots to hack-fests, but he seemed very good at both.

Good GM quote: "Yeah! You got him! Now what are you going to do about the rest of the vampires?"

I was playing in my first Buffy: The Vampire Game, and the GM was excellent. He knew we were all new or relatively new to the system, and he made sure we had a good time playing. He was great at explaining the rules, telling us what we could do (not what we couldn't do), and encouraged us to really play in character. He had a smile on his face the whole time, and it was obvious that he liked teaching the game and making new converts. It worked, when we finished, I went right to the dealer's hall and bought a copy of the rules.
I think the GMs name was Bill, so if you're reading this, Bill "Thanks!"

No one's taken anything I've said as a bad GM quote.

Man, I sat down at this one table of Green Regent and saw the DM's name was Dinkel-something-or-other, and just thought, "Aw, crap, this is going to suck!"

Actually, Dinkeldog did a great job running our table of Green Regent. I didn't realize until later who he was, though, at which point I had a big, loud, d'oh.

Also, I had the pleasure of having Joe Bright as a great DM for 3 rounds of Living Greyhawk. Very fun time. Especially when the big spoiler deleted rolled a 1 vs. my destruction. Of course, it was only fair that I later rolled a 1 on my Will save in a different mod. "But it's still a 25! Stupid Skip!"

:D

not a quote, but an inspiration. several times during the all enworlder spycrat game that p-kitty ran for teflon william, pielorhino, spider, emergent, zarathustran and i he paused 9whilst still SEEMING to pay attention to us) and wrote down what this character or that had said for later use.

low on sleep, slaving at dming for as many enworlders as possible and having to bring food to the table for lack of eating time he was still trying to improve his gaming skills. and trust me, they showed no weakness.

as for quotes, more of a moment- my character "bec" was a speedster of sorts, a driver for the group and had what i call the "fonzie" feat. when an engine wouldn't start, or when it did somehtign wrong i could smack it, bang it or curse at it (or find the wires) and fix/start it (i think the feat was called "jump start").

when we were moving down the amazon towards the bbeg's hideout pcat required a move silently roll. i got a 2  at this point i proudly and boldly announced "i will use my 'bang on it' feat and slap the overly noisy engine to quiet it. i roll- a big fat 1.

p-kitty- "the engine falls from the boat and sinks to the bottom of the river" :p

And don't forget the followup quotes:

p-kitty- "...does anyone want to jump into the water to retrieve it?"

all- "NO!"

Piratecat had many great quotes, all of them--ALL of them--delivered in the appropriate accent. The man is amazing.

I had one other really good GM at Gencon, an attractive young woman from Montreal who stepped in at 9:00 PM to run our Generic-ticket-clutching group through a Legacy of the Green Regent event. We gamed past 1:00 AM, but she managed to keep our table entertained and on task despite the late hour and being given the module at the last minute. Alas, I don't recall her name.
