Good horror d20?

I’m looking for a good scare. I took a look-see through RangerWickett refrigerator and hoo-boy was that some frightening stuff. But not exactly what I was looking for – namely, some horror-themed material for use in a fantasy d20 game.

Can you recommend something that would work? Ideally, it should be rules compatible – the less conversion I have to do, the better.

Have you looked at CoC d20? It has the best advice for mood in horror games bar none in rpgs. The other d20 horror books I have are Midnight and Darkness and Dread (both FFG) and the former is more depressing than most games and the latter is a toolbox for d20 horror.

I can second the recommendation of Call of Cthulhu d20. Nice sanity rules and great advice on running a horror type game.

The older non-d20 CoC book has fantastic ideas and hints on setting mood, unfolding the story to your players, and establishing a "horror" mood or theme, too. Its all in your presentation, nevermind the rule set.

I am not all that familiar with the whole Ravenloft thing, but I know there is a d20 sourcebook for it.

Not only is d20 Call of Cthulhu seemingly exactly what you're looking for, the Book of Vile Darkness has a lot of useful horror elements in it.

There is also OGL Horror by Mongoose.

I was very impressed when reading through OGL Horror, in particular by the way the fear/madness rules work and the basic classes available. It could be a good choice if you want something generic as opposed to Cthulhu related.

Disclaimer: I am *incredibly* biased here because the book was written by my mate Gar Hanrahan (Mytholder). :)

I concur that OGL Horror is very well written. I've kept it around for awhile now and use it on occasion for my D&D game.

It has a plethora of materials. A Player's Guide/Handbook, a book for DM's, a Monster book, several regional books, books for playing good chars, for evil chars, and a lot of other stuff. Several of their books have been redone and expanded when 3.5 hit the scene, too.

Ravenloft is the classical gothic horror setting, where evil is everywhere, people won't leave the houses at night. It's a realm of no escape, a world where Evil is an actual force that may very well react to your evil deeds - rewarding and punishing you at the very same time, according to your nature and the nature of your deed.

Ditto. Note that CoC d20, while not being printed anymore is still available on the Internet (amazon.com). While CoC d20 only deals with Cthulhu horror, OGL horror deals with all sort of horror genres.
