Good inexpensive microphone for recording your group?

Just curious, but why do you record sessions?
Mine would be 4-5 hours of dialog that no one would listen to again. I suppose it might be useful for arguments about what anyone said in a past game...

I haven't actually recorded any sessions but I have seriously thought about it. The main reasons would be to help me remember any notable quotes or moments from the session. I get most of them down but I'm sure that I miss some. I send out an e-mail with the memorable moments and quotes after each session.

The other use would be if I was dedicated enough to write a Story Hour. It would make things a lot easier to write if I had a recording of the session. Since I don't have the time for a Story Hour at the moment it's not a big issue for me.

I'm going to be the DM, and I have a memory like a leaky sieve that's been used for 8-gauge shotgun ballistics testing. While I don't think I'll ever listen to the whole thing, having it for reference would be handy, and if somebody does say something memorable, I'll have a quotes file. :)

I've played in recorded sessions before. It changed the players' and GM's behaviour, I found. Overall, it was a good thing to have done. I might do that myself (as GM) some day.

Re: microphones, go for pretty much any old condenser mic. Some of those already mentioned are no doubt of that general type. Essentially, they draw (i.e., condense) sound from 'everywhere'; in other words from most points in a room, say.

I record the sessions so that I can summarize and post each adventure on our group's website. My memory isn't always that great and the recordings help me when I write out these summaries.

Those answers do make sense. My memory is like a leaky sieve as well. And sending out quotes to the gaming group sounds like a good overall use.
