EVERYTHING Sherlock Holmes, by Arthur Conan Doyle or anyone else authorized by the Doyle estate. Also, with this, I'd recommend Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency and The Long Dark Tea Time of The Soul by Douglas Adams - primarily to help (further? ;) ) break your mind and make your DMing plans less predictable for the players. :]

As a by-product of a thread I stared last night: The Jhereg books by Steven Brust (gritty city based with a first-person, film noir style). Likewise for the "Garrett" books by Glen Cook (Sweet Silver Blues, etc.).

Something I wish they did: a list of suggested READING instead of just some movies. I wonder, WHAT books would they put on this list?

Any novel concerning the Shadow, the Spider, Doc Savage or the Phantom. Yank all '40's/'50's descriptions of pulp-tech and replace with magical equivalents.

Read Fu Manchu by Max Rohmer (spelling?).

Fory mysteries, some Agatha Christie might not hurt....although more '20's in flavor, she might inspire some mystery adventures just the same.

Read Raymond Chandler, obviously, as well as Dashiel Hammett (again, spelling?).

If your eyes haven't fallen out and your brain imploded from all that reading, there are some decent Dark Horse comics of The Shadow. Some Hellboy might not be bad either--although the tone is off kilter, the topic is spot on.

The Difference Engine is a great book (Bruce Sterling & my hero, William Gibson). "Steampunk," yes, but I see it meshing with the aforementioned Leage of Extraordinary Gentlemen motif nicely.

OK, now your brain should implode.

Yeah! And early Popular Science and Popular Mechanics issues with articles about "future tech" would probably work nicely, too. :)

Glen Cook

Read the Garrett PI series by Glen Cook, It's a perfect match for Eberron. Gritty ex-soldier detective with undead psychic partner solves mysteries in a massive corrupt fantasy city. Elves, trolls and gods all feature prominently.
The series runs like this: Sweet Silver Blues; Bitter Gold Hearts; Cold Copper Tears; Old Tin Sorrows; Dread Brass Shadows; Red Iron Nights; Deadly Quicksilver Lies; and Petty Pewter Gods.
They really are excellent.
