Good low-level spells for Arcane Archer ?

I would say no, even if the spell allowed a reflex save. Is it overpowering the ability ?
Yeah, I think that's probably not a good idea.

(Glad you guys are exploring the class. I don't see enough Arcane Archers - everybody but *everybody* goes Order of the Bow instead.)

Arcane archer

Depends on the game. If you are low magic, those magic arrows are massive. & if you don't get many chances for sneak attacks, the order isn't much.

However, may I suggest making this Ranger 2-fighter2-Wizard4? Ranger doesn't gain much past 1st, and 2 levels of fighter is 2 feats.

Ranged Sneak Attack doesn't even factor into that decision.

Every Fighter Archer that pops up in my game heads straight for Close Combat Shot, even when Enchant Arrow would be smarter.

Going Ranger means 4 more skill points in a good list and one spell from the marvelous Ranger Spell list.
Just kidding ... Ranger fits more the NPC personality.
Moreover, I wanted to resist the temptation of making NPC with 1 level of ranger+1 barb +2 fighter ...
It's a "practice what you preach" thing.
You almost made me fail my will save though ;)

The imbue arrow ability unfortunately, is largely though not completely useless, since it is limited to area effect spells and basically all of them have sufficient range that using the bow range is essentially irrelevant. So I wouldn't spend a great deal of time trying to come up with good spells to use with imbue arrow.

That said the arcane archer in my last campaign got a lot of use out of glitter dust, which has blinding effects and reveals invisible creatures. Especially nice for dealing with flying invisible mages.

I'm afraid I partly agree with this. Imbue Arrow could have been much more fun with more spells usable.

How was he targeting flying invisible mages ? Readying action to cast glitterdust
when they were casting spells with visual effects ?

On AA vs. OotB

I failed my will save. My character is a Rogue/Fighter/Holy Liberator/Order of the Bow Initiate/Templar (3/4/5/7/1)!

I considered AA but just found that OotB, even though I will never reach the max class level for it, is better for the stacking with rogue sneak attack, and my good wisdom bonus (for the zen archery thing). AA is much more a wizard thing, and I find it hard just to take a few levels of wizard. Having said that, at the moment I am in the middle of the largest battle so far, and against about 7 20th level wizard (some with prestige classes) I am struggling to do much, so maybe the wizard levels would have helped?

Go for obscuring mist, as its one of the few area spells at low level. Grease is fun too. You might want to allow touch spells to be imbued onto the arrows too if you are struggling (this makes much more sense to me anyway!) so then you can shocking grasp =).

Oh damn! I had cool plans making my elven cleric to Archane Archer for those arrows with inflict moderate/serious wounds, but if it's only area spells, it would not work... Back to the drawing board
