Just rented this last night. It was kind of a surprise.
While the trailer makes it look like zany fun, it feels a lot like a feature length Black Mirror episode, with some extremely dark elements in it (although not nearly as dark as the darkest Black Mirror stuff), combined with a riff on Terminator.
The movie also turns out to be more tightly plotted than any Gore Verbinski movie I can recall, although there's at least one dangling thread at the end (how did the audio version of the dead son know so much?) that wasn't ever explained. I suspect that answer was left on the cutting room floor.
Folks involved in the production are definitely also gamers, as there's both dialogue and set dressing referencing Portal, Mass Effect (according to my wife) and other videogames that touch on the dangers of AI.
Definitely recommended for folks who like time travel movies, Black Mirror, the Terminator (if Skynet relied on the gig economy instead of murder cyborgs) and anyone in the excellent cast.
