Good published Campaign World for 1-on-1 gaming

First Post
I am looking to GM a 1-on-1 game with a buddy of mine, and I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations for modules, settings, etc that are conducive to this idea. He will have an NPC cohort but most published modules are really tailored to larger groups.

Any ideas?

*faovrs using the Scarred Lands." Sort of Don Quixote type of Paladin, with his faithful Sancho...only much buffer and more streetsmart. Howse that?

I second the Scarred Lands... :D

You'll probably find very few published modules that are specifically designed for a single player. I would recommend either starting out at a higher level, or planning on writting your own adventures until the character reaches 3-4 level. Following this point, you can begin using modules written for a party of 1st-lvl characters in the solitaire environment. Obviously, you will need to fill any critical skill gaps with magic, equipment or NPC's (ie: Cleric's healing, Rogue's pickpocket, etc). The Serpent Amphora trilogy of Scarred Lands modules is really quite good, as is a lot of the material from Necromancer Games.

It might be an unconventional suggestion, but I'd recommend Dark Sun, first printing; I really think a single, Conan-style PC works great in that setting. (By Conan-style, I don't mean "Big tough guy who smashes crap." but rather "Self-reliant character who handles things himself.") You can get all of the old modules for pretty cheap at RPGNOW.

Hey Nightfall -- I agree with you on scarred lands. I dropped of the face of the gaming earth for 3-4 months working on an insane project, but I am a DIE hard scarred lands fan (as you might remember). Actually that was the setting I was seriously considering. I was also looking at Oathbound too. This player already made a Scarred Lands PC too.

Eberron > Sharn. Play a game of politics, intrigue, backstabbing, urban warfare between competing interests, etc. Have you played GTA: San Andreas or Vice City? Take those sort of plots, and stick them in Sharn. :)

I remember. And if he already has a SL PC, just have him use that. Insert NPC as needed.

Being done today. As we speak (type?) I am creating the NPC.

Bummer about the Scarred Lands being discontinued, but in another sense, I am no longer worried about meta-plots eroding the fabric of my personal tweaks to large storylines.

Of all the settings available today that are being published, I think the best for one-on-one gaming has gotta be Conan from Mongoose, followed by Valus and then Scarred Lands. Those three are pretty good for the solo game. But SL is at an end, but the books are pretty cool, and the latest one coming out about the lost lands (I can't remember the name) seems really damn cool.

Of any setting published, Dark Sun is a very good one for solo campaigns, probably better than Conan.
