Hey all;

I've got an area in my campaign world that has a language based on French. Does anybody have a good resource for French names for people and places?

Thanks

I would do a web search on French names. You might also want to check around for the 2nd Edition Historical Sourcebook on Charlemagne and the Franks. (TalonComics should have a copy or two.)

In the interim, check out http://www.yourdictionary.com. It has links to several good linguistics sites.

Thanks... I think I've got that sourcebook, actually! Sometimes you can forget what's in your closet... ;)

I remember the "Montaigne" name in Seventh Sea. It was hilarious. Now if you want french-like name for a D&D setting, I'm not sure a phonebook will be so great, because medieval french and modern are not quiet the same (and there are many spanish, polish, algerian, russian, german ... names in a french phonebook. My own name is german). Use rather Quebec phone book.
Then you have to think what kind of french name you want : "Langue d'Oc"(southern medieval french, closer to italian or spanish, mostly based on latin) or "Langue d'Oil" (northern medieval french, closer to modern french, with more german an celtic influence) ? Anyway, your best source for persone name will be a good history book, and for place name, I think an atlas or a touristic guide will be what you want (seek something like the "guide Michelin" with google).
As for Charlemagne and the franks...I haven't read this book, but it could have more to do with german than with french name : the franks were a germanic people, and Charlemagne capital, called Aix-la Chapelle in France, is Aachen, in Germany...(If only the son of Charlemagne had one son rather than three, Europa would have been united 1100 years ago, and we would not have those two world wars...)

French names

hello,

this is my first post here and I'm browsing the different threads to see if I can be of any help.
Looks like I can here since I'm french :)

Do you want first names or last names ? I could give you some links to universities' websites where there's a list of students. You could get real names.

Tell me if you're interested
