Good systems for aerial/3D combat

I'm curious if anyone is familiar with any gaming systems (d20 or not) that handle aerial/3D combat well, particularly combat involving high speeds (like with jet/star fighters).

I'm hacking together a homebrew Robotech RPG ('cause the Palladium system needs work in the opinion of my gaming group), and I'm looking for a rules set that can *ahem* inspire me.

Ideally I'm hoping for something simple and abstract (I'm trying to build a faster paced game system), but anything good can be adapted.

Mike Mearls wrote a simple one a few years back in Goodman Games'
Aerial Adventure Guide: Sky Captain's Handbook. It's d20 and fudges a lot of the distances by using a single table to reference.

Skip Williams wrote one as well, but I can't remember off the top of my head as for whom. It's complex though. Seemless though in the tradition of his Cry Havoc.

Honestly, from hearing what you are attempting to do with the system? I'd say look at some of the aerial wargames out there. There are plenty of fighter plane games with all variety of rules. You'd do better asking for those at wargamer.com.

If it has to be an RPG, look at Star Wars Revised for a d20 system for flying ships. Again, I don't think it's what you want.

Thanks for the tips.

I was part of a group that put together a pretty detailed set of aerial combat rules a few years back. They were part of a much larger effort to create a consistent set of rules for universe creation that never quite panned out, but these are more or less self-contained. I'd make a lot of changes to these now if I were going to re-write them, but there's some pretty good ideas in there.

Enjoy!

My heart goes to "Ace of Aces". God, I loved those two little books: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ace_of_Aces
