Ari, this sounds really cool, and by far is the thing I am looking forward to most from WotC this year! Can you tell us any more about it? How long is the book? It is more in the vein of gothic horror, cosmic (Chulhu) horror, etc? Is there any Far Realm goodness? I know you've probably got a non-disclosure agreement with Wizards, but any info you could provide would be much appreciated! :D

I brought this over here so as not to hijack the other thread in which the above quote was posted.

Gothmog - If you are looking for a book to help you run horror campaigns, then may I suggest checking out Nightmares of Mine by Kenneth Hite (whom I conisder one of horror gaming masters) and published by ICE? Nightmares is a completely system-free source book, making it usablefor any system.

Yeah, it's a good book, I concur! It's virtually rules-free, but makes suggestions for using the art of storytelling to create a mood rather than rolling dice to do so.

Thanks for the heads-up Rasyr, and I already have Nightmares of Mine. I have found that without a doubt, it is the best horror RPG resource I have ever run across, and it sits in an honored place on the shelf next to my CoC and Kult stuff. I bought it 4 or 5 years ago, and have used it extensively in many of my campaigns, from fantasy, to CoC and modern, to spacefaring games (Fading Suns). For anyone wanting a good horror resource, definitely buy it!

I was interested in Ari's new book because I've enjoyed his previous work, and I'm intrigued that WotC decided to pursue a somewhat niche topic for their book- what I'm hoping for are some interesting options for a D&D/D20 based game for horror.

Crothian - to take you last question first - Simple, you never asked. :D

Nightmares of Mine is a 5" x 9" softcover, 176 pages (although the last few are advertisements from the old ICE).

Here is some of the back cover text:

Horror has been with us for as long as there have been stories. This book explores the ins and outs of what makes a great horror story and what it takes to make a great horror story into one of the most memorable role playing experiences you and your players will ever participate in. The basic content of this book is completely system independent (though guidelines for use with Rolemaster are provided).

Inside, you will find...
  • Concepts and types of horror that can be used to tell a story
  • How horror can work in any type of campaign: fantasy, historical, modern, or even sci-fi
  • How to incorporate horror into different styles of games
  • What makes horror different from normal role playing and how to adjust you GMing styles and playing styles to accomodate this special type of story
  • How to design horror scenarios that keep players on the edge of their seats
  • How to most effectively run a session that uses horror elements
  • How to weave horror scenarios into full-blown campaigns
