Gotta get this off my chest...

Funny; I've NEVER put an NPC in a situation where there could be combat, without having all the information I needed ready to go BEFOREHAND ... so I never USED the old NPC tables, not once.

Do your prep work before the game, not during.

Don't you think that's a little short sighted? I mean, what if the PCs go off and want to do something you hadn't thought of? This happens to me all the time in my game and I have to wing certain parts of the adventure, creating NPCs on the fly. Eventually it will happen, and that table has proven to be a great asset to me in the past.

I for one will be creating a generic list of NPCs at different levels in 3.5 format because of this so that I can have ready NPCs at all times. That's a lot of work, but its necessary for my games to run smoothly. It is kind of annoying to me that I have to do this, since the NPC charts in the new DMG won't get any use out of me. What are they for anyway?

In 3.5E, neither magic armour nor magic weapon resize.

Andy Collins has suggested that it's a good idea to create a "resizable" armour and weapon feature - something you can add to a magic weapon in the same way you add "vorpal".

I expect that this is an area that will be house-ruled. :)

Cheers!

Correct me if i'm wrong, but isn't the old way included in the dmg as a varient option? Besides, this new approach allows for greater customization in equiping Huge and above monsters.

What it does is put the wearable magic item rewards more in the DM's control if you have a party of mixed races, like i do. I am keeping such items as magically resizeable because i want the party to decide who gets what, not me.

i don't consider it overpowering in any way, so why change it?

No. He who is prepared for all things, is unprepared for nothing.

Then I reach into my box-o-game-stuff, pull out my Tome of Nearly Endless Premade NPCs, flip to the right section, and voila! I have an NPC.

Once it's used, if it's a nongeneric sort, I re-file it under known NPCs. If it was generic, I make a quick note of the character (name, description, age/race/gender, etc) on an index card.

I have never had players attack an NPC when I didn't anticipate the possibility of combat ensuing. Ever.

... and just such a list is why I said what I just said. I'm never caught off-guaard, because I have stats worked out for any unique NPCs the players might be in combat with, and, I keep a stock of "archetype" NPCs for the sorts that generally get into combat (town guardsmen, for example).

I never really understood what the charts in the CURRENT DMG were for; I mean, really, is EVERY tenth-level NPC Bard in your campaign world identical, down to how many pairs of SOCKS they own? Does EVERY NPC fighter of 15th level have much the same equipment, feats, skills, and attributes ... differing only by race?!?

This is one of my favorite changes. I can't say it enough. I absolutely hate resizeable armor. It was the stupidest thing I have ever heard of.

Why the heck would you pay more to make something work better when someone kills you and takes your stuff? Now a low level arcane spell I could see...

You need it to keep your armor's resale value up. Plus, it makes those Ye Olde Magic Shops more efficient since they don't have to stock different sizes.

Aaron (didn't even know that armor ever resized, I missed that one line in the 3.0 DMG)

Absolutely agreed. However, it's not really a "change" for me, since I never had resizeable armor in 3.0, either.
