Gotta make a new character

LostSoul

So, while looking for things to kill so I can take their stuff in Rappan Athuk, I bought the farm. (Stupid Dust of Sneezing and Choking.) Now I need to make a new character.

I'd like to make a martial character who is focused on mastering the art of war. Based around a longsword. I want something "mystic" for the character as well. Psychic Warrior was a good fit, but the DM is a little freaked out by the Powers and Psionic Feats so I'm not going to go with that again.

I'm thinking about a Cleric but, never having played one (or really looked at the class in depth), I don't really know where to begin.

So, any pointers? I'll be starting off at 6th level with standard (13k) gold/equipment.

Paladin? Or show 'em all how Rangers can r00l!

I was thinking about a Paladin, but I don't want to play Lawful Good. Otherwise the class is pretty cool.

I was also thinking about a Ranger/Fighter, but the DM doesn't seem to look at the results of Spot or Listen checks. So a big part of the Ranger's abilities are cut out right there.

Quick details on what's already in the party, please?

Human Wizard 7
Gnome Cleric 1/Wizard 6
Dwarf Fighter 4/Cleric 3
Human Rogue 6? There might be a level of Bard in there
Half-Orc Cleric 6

Barbarian? Good move, good BAB, tough as nails. Downplay the rage aspect and pump your INT, preserving rage for urgent times. Mysticism can come from the character's background rather than spellcasting.

Oooh, Bard. Definitely Bard. GMW, True Strike, pump CHA and UMD.

Other plan: I'm currently playing a Sorcerer who acts like a fighter. Took lots of verbal only spells, wears armor, likes to mix it up. Same basic premise as the bard I mentioned in the previous post, but you have good arcanist spells to fall back on, rather than the watered down bardic ones.

You must found a god with the War domain, whose favorite weapon is the longsword, such as Corellon.
Then, you wil have 3 or 4 feats : choose extend spell (to be able to pick persistent spell at 9th level), scribe scroll (so you can choose combat spell without worrying about utility spells) and extra turning > this one give you access to many divine feat, great for increasing your effectivness in melee (sxord and fist).

Put as much as you can skill points in Tumble : this will allow you to try avoiding AoO. You will have only one useful attack per round until a high level, so use your move equivalent action to place your character where he need to be.

Think about the craft arms and armor feat + the good domain, which will allow you to create holy sword, the best weapon of the game.

Put skill points in sense motive (you don't want t be feinted by those pesky rogues, since your Hit point are low), and try to find a mithril breastplate and shield : good AC, good mobility, low weight. (You should be able to pick up a fallen comrade out of combat).

Choose a Ring of protection rather than a + for your armor : you can always cast magic vestment on it.

Bladesinger

Look into the Tome & Blood bladesinger (download the web supplement from WOTC, contains an updated version of the PRC). You need to be elven or half-elven, focusssed on longsword exclusively, and can get into it as a ftr4/wiz2 (roughly).

In return, you get fighter BAB, some low-level spell progression, reduced arcane failure in light armor, and handy abilities like
casting martial-related spells as free actions in combat and 'flurry of blows' with a longsword. Great thematic PRC, sounds similiar to what you're describing.
