Gotta make a new character

Your idea of basing the character around the longsword attack suggests an idea to me: what about a dex-focused elf with weapon finesse (longsword)? You could build a feat set based around the dodge and expertise feats with an emphasis on the character's movability.

There are many possible class directions -- ranger, rogue, fighter, bard, barbarian but what I would personally favour is either a fighter/rogue or a fighter/bard.

I suggest a Ranger with Tumble as a class skill via Cosmopolitan, and, after you rack up some exp, get levels of Blade Dancer (OA). It's a sword focused semi-magical (have a few spell-like abilities, need to cast spells to qualify) wuxia type class which is the awesomeness from a 'jumping 300 feet without breaking a sweat is cool' point of view.

Stupid rules, always getting in the way. you can only finesses light weapons, rapiers, and spiked chains. So unless it's a Large elf, or a Small longsword, that doesn't exactly work. ;)

DM's Viewpoint:)

Well, since I know that the DM is still working his way through the 3E rules... (I'm the DM).

I would reconsider the Ranger/Fighter combination, and we can discuss the Listen/Spot rules in more detail.

I know that it is a little more free-form than most games, but I think we can make it work if we can come to agreement on the basics.

Any advice is appreciated and encouraged.

Looks to me like your party could use a straight up fighter-type. Monks really get cool when they start hitting those levels you are at, but it is kinda bad you don't get any reward for the treasures you discover. I would go for a fighter with 1,2, or 3 levels in rogue. That way you can get the extra skills to add to the party and some abilities to help in battle as well as save your own skin. Strongest atributes IMO, in order: STR, DEX, CON, CHA, INT, WIS.

How about an elven Bladesinger? Gives your party some of the combat help it seems it could use, and lets you focus on the longsword as you want. Just make sure to use the revised one in the web enhancement to Tome & Blood and not the one which appeared originally in the book.

Fighter/sorcerer ---> spellsword. Not a bad combination if you want to play the classic warrior wizard.

Alternately a Barbarian/Fighter/Sorcerer, I see this as being almost like a character from a fighting game spells = special techniques. First special technique is of course your rage ability. This requires more protective spells than the first idea since you probably won't have armour, however with something like expiditous retreat you'll have superior mobility, really cool with something like spring attack.

The only real problem with these (moreso for the second one in my opinion) is that pretty good stats are needed to be decently viable. Good con, to make up for the sorcerer levels, Good Dex to make up for the limited armour selection (this is more of a problem with the second than the first). decent str to compensate for weakened BAB, and a decent chr score to cast higher level spells. Now of course some of these problems can be filled in as you go with bonus points to your attributes, but still they are a lot more dependent on stats than say a straight classed wizard.

Ftr 2/Monk X, with the feat from some old Dragon magazine that lets you use the longsword as if it was a monk weapon. :)

Curious, which gods does your DM use, or did he even say? (Cause I might just use the Necromancer's gods...but SL gods are translatable into Rappan Athuk as well...)
