GP Value of a spellbook?

Fool
My party recently defeated an evil wizard, and they will probably be looking to sell his spellbook (no wizards in group). I can't seem to find any reference to calculating the GP value of a full spellbook.

Any tips?

Thanks in advance,

There's no real guidelines in any rule books (to the best of my knowledge). Since any wizard wanting the spells would still have to scribe them him/herself, I would say it depends on the availability of the spells in the book, and spells in general. If there are free magical libraries, and only common spells in the book, then it's practically worthless. Rare spells would up the value, as would sources of spells (libraries or individuals) charging for access to spells.

Don't forget, that - if you use those rules from FRCS - you can actually use another Wizard's spellbook after studying it for some time. Therefore you could save some money on scribing cost!

I'd set the price to about 20gp per spell level included in the book.

That's one tenth of the total scribing cost involved to get all the spells and takes into consideration, that probably many of the spells are quite standard and therefore worth pretty much nothing at all.

If the book has really rare and hard to aquire stuff written in it, you could up the price up to 100 or even 200gp per spell level for those specific spells.

Another approach would be to calculate the cost of aquiring scrolls of all the spells in the book, sum it up and divide by two or more.

spell cost

hi,

If you want to learn a new spell you need to buy it, the most usual way is to buy a scroll with the spell on it. So the value of each spell in the book is atleast equal to a scroll of that spell. I would even multiply it by 2.

But don't forget that most spell books are much cheaper. Most spellbooks got traps on them and if not all traps are removed from the book, the cost could prob be 10% of the real value. Would you start to study a spellbook of a mage what got traps on them?

Also an other effect is that if all traps are still in place you are not sure what spells are in the spell book. Also if the traps are removed you don't know what the spells are without a mage.

More effects are that some spells are worth little money. In most cases necromantic spells are even outlawed.

In most cases I would value a spellbook equal to 25gp per page writen in the book (level 1 spell takes 2 pages). But depending on who they sell it give 10 to 75% of that value. Most likely 50%
