GPS & Geocaching

Yarr Matey... tis real life treasure hunting says I. The kind that gets ye off yer well padded gamer backside and into the bountiful bosom of Mother Nature herself.

Just wondering if there were any geocachers out there. I figured that it would be a huge hit with the gamer geek crowd because it's
1. Gadgety
2. Adventurey
3. Treasure!

Interestingly the last gamer site I posted to had no clue as to what I was referring.

Also - any have good suggestions for good low-end GPS for geocaching? $50-$150 range?

Garmin etrex.

Retail for $100. You can pick it up cheaper online.

The whole geocaching thing is kind of funny to me. Handheld GPS is something most people don't need, but they think it's cool and they want it anyway, so they had to make up with something to do with it. Reminds me of CB radios in the '70s.

Don't get me wrong. I have nothing against any activity that gets people outside, exploring natural settings, getting a better sense of the world around them, and getting some exercise to boot!

When I was a kid in the Scouts, we did very similar orienteering competitions. I just think it's funny that it took the addition of GPS to make it a widespread hobby.

The Universe and I have a Garmin GPS system in our main vehicle and we absolutely love it. Best feature: if you miss a turn, it recalculates the fastest route to your final destination from your now-messed-up location. :) (I miss a lot of exits... hehehe).

Does a little voice pipe up that says "Hey, dumba**! You missed your turn.... again!"

No... but if it did, I may pay a little more attention. ;)

Maybe you could get Mr. T to do it for you—

"Fool! You shoulda turned left! I'm tired of your mistakes and jibba-jabba!"

My sister and her family used to be huge in geocaching. I've gone on several hunts with them. I really enjoyed it. We'd go find several in the Kansas City area when they'd come to visit. I'd love to do it, but my daughters are far too young to take them out. Strollers don't do too hot in the wilderness. I'll wait several years.
