GRIM TALES

Based upon the d20 Modern SRD, Bad Axe Games' Grim Tales is the high adventure, low magic campaign tool-kit for fantastic roleplaying in your favorite pulp genres, from the dawn of Atlantis to the apocalyptic future of a dying planet. Each chapter is presented in true tool-kit fashion, allowing the GM to pick and choose from a wide variety of campaign trappings?Spellcasting, Horror, Technology, Vehicles, Firearms, Cyberware, and more-- and to integrate them seamlessly into the campaign. In addition, this rulebook brings to fruition Bad Axe Games' founding principle to provide `games with grit,' and includes multiple variants of each optional rule to allow gamemasters to fine-tune the realism and lethality of their game.

Since I don't own d20 Modern, I have a quick question; for "increased grit" what are some ways that the lethality of combat --especially fantasy/medieval-- are increased?

That is, if you're allowed to say ;)

Clearly, the single greatest threat is the low-magic nature of the setting itself. The survivability of your PC is determined far more by your skills and abilities than your access to magic items and magical healing. Combat is far more deadly because the usual cycle of "buff up, dust up, heal up" is finally broken. Combat matters.

In addition, other small tweaks such as a lower Massive Damage Threshold, and more frequent checks for certain types of "realistic" damage, including things like critical hits, falling, the elements, damage from traps, etc. add to the overall lethality.

Of course, as mentioned in the release blurb, each of these things are tweakable by the DM on a case-by-case basis to custom tailor the lethality level of the campaign to your favorite genre.

EDIT: And you really should own d20 Modern. It's an incredible value: 10 pounds of pulp and tons of crunch you can mine.

I hope I will be able to get this in the Netherlands* without too much hassle. This in combination with the Kalamar campaign setting (and JUST the campaign setting - the player's guide ruins everything IMO) could be just what I need.

I've been known to take overseas orders on a personal basis... If you're willing to pay the shipping, I'm willing to walk it down to the post office for you. It's a little extra hassle but I like to share the love. ;)

Sigh, another $40 out the door because...

IT MUST BE MINE!! :D:D

(hmmm, perhaps my dream of converting Warhammer FRP may come to pass after all...)

Of course, you could always just use the Modern SRD and Bad Axe game's product, I'm assuming, and thus save the $40 for d20 Modern. Although I agree with Wulf -- everybody should own that book anyway. :)
