sometimes I think I should just have a gladiator pit and throw the players into it with out weapons....do several survival rounds with monsters and iron out all the grappling rules that way.

I noticed that it was slightly revised because I had already cut and paste the original 4 articles into a Word document. That and the fact that someone posted the article with "track changes" still on! Not much seemed to get changed though.

Well, the difference between 'Use all natural weapons' and 'BAB dependent' is a significant one.

Grappling only seems complicated because it doesn't come up that often.

Four pages of rules explained in lavish detail so as to be completely clear is not a complicated set of rules.

Once you know how one is initiated, how one is ended, and how to do say one default option in the middle (for example, 'damage opponent') the rest is just gravy.

The combat system in general is like that. You don't have to know all the options like 'fight defensively', 'trip', 'sunder', 'disarm', 'bullrush', 'overrun' and so forth initially. All you need to know most of the time is how to do a standard attack, a full attack, and a charge.

The very first combat of my current campaign was a huge scrum with multiple grapplers, (I am talking like six or seven folks grappling, surrounding by another half-dozen people involved in their own grapples/fistfights) some of which were PCs and some of which were drunken commoners in a pub - and while there were a few questions at first, by the second round it was running pretty clearly and smoothly.
