I just discovered Gratuitous Space Battles and it's really quite cool.
Basically, you design your own ships, set them into formations, and give them orders (e.g. escort this ship, be cautious, prioritize damaged targets, etc). Then you just sit back and watch as your fleet squares off against the enemy fleet. There's no interaction at all during combat, you just sit there and watch. You can speed it up or slow it down as you please
It's basically a single player game, but you can upload your fleets to be challenged by other people.
It reminds me more than a bit of Master of Orion II, if you took only the combat and ship management from that seminal classic, refined the ship design and planning, and upgraded the graphics.
It's $10 on steam, or $20 from the manufacturer. There's also an expansion pack for $6 which adds a new race.
