Gray Ooze acid damage

0-hr

Starship Cartographer
Acid (Ex): A gray ooze secretes a digestive acid that quickly
dissolves organic material and metal. Any melee hit deals acid
damage. The ooze's acidic touch deals 40 points of damage
per round to wood or metal objects. Armor or clothing dissolves
and becomes useless immediately unless it succeeds at a Reflex
save (DC 19). The acid cannot harm stone. A metal or wooden
weapon that strikes a gray ooze also dissolves immediately unless
it succeeds at a Reflex save (DC 19).
If a gray ooze attacks and grapples a character, does this acid have any affect on his equipment?

Watch as I avoid the subject yet again!

IMC, I've changed oozes from dealing damage to objects, to dealing additional regular damage over successive rounds (like the acid arrow spell). It's silly that getting splattered by an ooze will damage your equipment, but being cut up by a giant's axe or being caught in a dragon's mouth won't.

So if a gray ooze hits someone, you apply 40 points of damage to every single piece of equipment that they have?

Somehow, I think that might be a bit much.

A grey ooze is one of those monsters that a party should avoid or run from. It has no treasure so technically a party that opts to fight it is doing so for XP gain only. They deserve to have their precious equipment destroyed. In future they will look for a way to avoid such a creature.

You only apply acid damage to everything if the creature's engulfed. I'd apply it to armor or shield first if the ooze just hits.
