Great City Campaign Setting...not 4e...sucks

great, Im not even going to look at the article, because I only play 4e now. I dont know why they would publish something for a defunct system though.

What's defunct?

The way I see it, WotC created a 50/50 split down the middle and has forced publishers to choose sides. Not a good approach.

I'm really looking forward to this line of products, especially since they are OGL. If they were 4E, I would care less about them.

I don't know why anyone would publish something for a defunct system, but what does this have to do with 3E or Pathfinder? ;)

My English-German translation tells me that "defunct" means "dead"/"deceased" or "no longer existing". Is a game already dead because its original creator no longer supports it? Is it dead when third-party publishers still produce material for it? Is it dead when no one plays it any more?

Of course, for the case at hand, another factor has to be considered: Since when are they developing the setting? Considering that neither the GSL nor the rules where available outside WotC and their playtesters before the release of the game, could they have reasonably created a GSL version of the game in the past year?

Well, in the end, it would be a bummer for me if I was that much interested in the campaign setting. Until I read some (positive) reviews and know some adventure material is published for it, I am not.

I'd appreciate it if you'd can the passive-aggresive snark and general air of superiority.

Interesting. I saw Jack99's post as a curious question, more than anything else. So hard to tell with tone of voice on the Internet. On the other hand I think Jack99's second post kind of shows what he really meant.

Your statement is simply untrue. The OGL is not now, nor can it ever be defunct. The SRD is not now nor can it ever be defunct. Both will live on in perpetuity.

4E and the GSL, on the other hand, will definitely be defunct one day. In fact, the fourth edition is a good example of planned obsolescence. When WotC determines it's time for 5E, all 4E publishing will halt and all publishers will move to 5E or die.

Those publishers that stick to the OGL, on the other hand, will never have to switch. They can continue publishing forever under the OGL.

What you are witnessing is the forking of D&D. I'll put my bets on the SRD and OGL for survival because, when all is said and done, they CAN NEVER BECOME DEFUNCT simply because of the open nature of the licensing.

So claiming that the OGL is defunct is simply a wrong statement. IT will never be defunct, unlike 4E which is planned to become defunct.

All hail Ryan Dancey.

Precisely!

D&D has forked. You ahve to choose your path. Until the GSL, I was solidly looking at 4E. Now, given the nature of the OGL, the only logical choice is the path that can never become defunct. That is the path of the OGL and the SRD.

Well, since you only have 23 posts and haven't been around very long, you probably haven't heard yet that Paizo will be releasing the Pathfinder RPG which is 3.5 compatible. Here's a press release about it and a link to their Web site:

I think that's one of the reasons why ascribing motives (and describing something as "passive aggressive" comes close to that) is disallowed.
Of course, it also shows that it's sometimes better to be a little more verbose.

I think he was saying that it sucked that the product was not going to be 4ed, as opposed to saying the product sucked! So, I think it was actually a compliment (in a backhanded sort of way).

That was my reading of it anyhow.
This is how I read it as well. Not that Great City sucked, but that he was going 4e, Great City is staying 3.x/OGL and that sucks for him because he wants to use it.

Maybe that is how I interpreted it because that's how I feel as well.

I feel sorry for you guys. My system is so awesome I don't have to pass on such cool products.

I see no reason why it wouldn't be easy to make this 4e just like I imagine it would be pretty easy to make it a little modern for Changeling and other modern fantasy games. You don't need an awesome system to be able to use items from other gamews. You need an awesome DM who has the ability to covernt items between two games.
I agree with Crothian on this one. I can certainly use any book I want to, I just need to make it work with my 4e game. Once I have familiarity with 4e, I can even wing-it and run it off the cuff.

But I have a wife, a small baby girl, a busy job and I support my mother-in-law. I have a LOT less RPG $$ than the past and I will likely buy 4e-based products over 3.x-OGL-based products because it makes my life easier. That isn't to say that all 4e products will be good and all OGL products will suddenly suck, I just need to make some choices now. I can't buy like I did in the past. My gaming library is full of an insane amount of books from 3.x.
I have to be more selective now.

If a 3.x product knocks my socks off, I will buy it. But I ALREADY HAVE a ton of 3.x products that knock my socks off. I don't need more...
