Greater magic weapon on magic weapons

Any character who sets himself up for that much sorrow when the first dispel magic hits deserves what he gets.

Except of course that the first dispel magic probably fails. d20+10 against a Dc of 26 for a 15th level GMW-xc is not gonna be much of a threat.

Greater dispels are rarer (while i have seen demons and their ilk with SLA-dispel i have seen few with Greater dispel) and then probably only have about a 60-65% chance.

The net result being a slight delay while the spell is recast.

this does not seem like that huge a risk to me.

One thing to realize is that in a world with GMW, the higher than +1 enhancements are not only devalued they are BAD for you.

A +1 sword and a +2 sword have little difference once GMW is able to boost both to +3.

Howwver, when i go to get HOLY added to the sword, the +1 sword only costs me 16k while the +2 sword costs me 24k.

After GMW they are both +3 holy.

Granted, but I disagree with you about greater dispel. Certainly, you don't have to really worry about it as a spell-like ability, but given the layers and layers of buff spells that high-level parties go around with, greater dispels strike me as a core tactic for that level. Yes, the failure chance is significant and that's disappointing when it happens, but the potential upside is huge.

There is also the problem that a dispel or greater dispel only un-buffs one character (or on a group only removes the 'highest-level' buff - although I am not sure whether it has been clarified how that interacts with metamagic - if a character has a stoneskin and a maximised bull's strength on, which one goes down?)

Of course there's always Mordenkainen's disjunction to use on a party; not only buffs but all permanent items !!!

The tie issue exists with even normal spells. i do count metamagic as levels for "highest spell level first" and i break ties with caster level followed by random.

MD... well all i can say is that if a campaign sees MD used on the PCs, then that makes the GMW approach even better. Would you rather lose a bunch of normal and +1 swords spelled up to +5 or a bunch of real honest to goodness +5 swords?

In my next game, GMW will be minuted per level and bow/arrow enhancements will be non-stackable.
