Greater or "better" doppleganger

*pets his Fiend Folio* Ever since it came out, I've had a covert arm of the Illithids driving the campaign world(and of course, the PCs) crazy. Ahh, Half-Illithid Dopplegangers are so fun.

In one of Atlas' book that has adventures in it there isa a really cool idea about how dopplegangers get trained to do what they do and it hints on some really cool ideas for advanced versions.

Yes, that is a nice template. The half-illithid lizardfolk example was a nice mini in Aberrations, too.

I might add that the template is in Underdark, too, and with a much cooler sample creature: the Mindwitness (half-illithid beholder). I so hope that they'll put that creature in the Underdark set of miniatures.

EDIT - I meant Fiend Folio. I was LOOKING at the Fiend Folio! Curses!

Mmmm... half-illithid. You know what's cool? Half-illithid gold dragons. Those whisker-tentacle thingies always look so harmless, the players will never see it coming. And already being grappled in a bite makes it easy to attach tentacles. :D

Also, Greater Doppelganger is indeed in Monsters of Faerun, pg. 35. In case anyone's still confused.

twisted thought...

Check Dopplegangers by Goodman Games...

Mimics are older dopplegangers! They tend to be look outs and teachers. The ones you meet in the dugeon are ... well, let's just say that the environment has a telling effect.

Older still are dopplegengers that pretend to be buildings!

Given time...everypart of a town (streets, benches, houses) are mind reading dopplegangers! Combine that with a hive mind and the ability to "record" their memories into a memory pool, as well as share those memories with others, and you have antagonists that never die (unless you take out the nest).

Scary thought #2: IMC, I use both this example of the Doppleganger and FR's Greater Dopplegangers. The second eats normal minds, adding even more to the Memory pools (MWHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!)

Greater doppelganger == doppelganger with class levels.
