[Green Ronin] Advanced Bestiary

My Take

In short, I enjoyed it. I think more could've been done with it and the art needs to be lightened in some sections but overall, a very good product that I've already started using.

I'm sure Psion will be using htis huge CR 20 thing since it has the word "chaos" in it's title for his River of Worlds campiagn. ;)

Some really surprised me. I mean some template concepts are pretty apparent, but Four Horseman of the Apocolypse was not my first thought of the sort of creature that you would make into a template. In fact, I found the thought sort of curious until I saw how they worked with it. Then I was like "ouch." Here's the thing: the four horseman are not physical creatures to be beat. They are manifestations of destruction. So long as any of the four horsemen remain, when one is destroyed, the destroyed horseman can possess a new creature. Which makes for a very nasty and challenging creature.

Well, looks like I'll be putting the Visions: Four Dread Horsemen pdf on the back burner for a while.

Ah well.

Is the book B&W? And are there sample beasties for each template? I rather prefer that, as it allows you to see the mechanical changes in effect, rather than in theory.

And if the answer is yes, are there a lot of different creatures used as the base, or just a few? I actually would prefer the latter, as comparing a "Super Draco-Troll" to a "Woven Ice Troll" is more useful to me than comparing a "Super Draco-Bugbear" to a "Woven Ice Otyugh" is.

Don't be so hasty. Not everyone who just wants four horsemen is going to own this book.

Generally only one example of each, though there are a few cases of templates with other templated creatures as a base (example: the horseman of war uses a bipedal winter wolf as a base creature, bipedal being another template.)

I know have the image of a winter wolf with two front legs, and two wheels for rear legs, like that dachsund that was all over the news a couple years back. :D

And yeah, I might still run the pdf soon. But I generally try and be careful about putting out content thematically similar to work others have recently done - it's easy to look like an idea poacher (and since I strongly suspect that I've been idea poached twice in as many months, I'm feeling leery about that).

If I was really only interested in Savage Species for the templates, would this book pretty much cover all of those, and OGL no less? In other words, in addition to creative ideas does it also cover more familiar ground like adding wings and multiple heads?
