Greg Tito Leaves Wizards of the Coast

Greg Tito, formerly the communications manager in charge of overseeing messaging for the Dungeons & Dragons brand, is departing Wizards of the Coast for a career in the public sector. Tito announced that he would be joining the Washington secretary of state's office starting this week, ending an over 9-year stint at Wizards. Tito will be the Deputy Director of External Affairs for the Washington secretary of state's office.

In addition to his typical communications responsibilities, Tito was also a driving force for establishing a Dungeons & Dragons community that received official support for Wizards during the early years of 5th Edition. Tito helped spearhead a thriving Twitch channel that featured a mix of Actual Play shows and in-house D&D programming that previewed upcoming projects, showcased various community events, and provided insight into the actual design work of Dungeons & Dragons. Tito was also one of the driving forces behind the Stream of Many Eyes and subsequent D&D Live events, which served to highlight upcoming D&D campaign books and spotlight a community of Actual Play shows and celebrities who were passionate about Dungeons & Dragons. The D&D Live events largely wound down during the pandemic, although Wizards resurrected the D&D Live branding for a celebrity-studded live play event at Gen Con this year.

Tito was also the co-host of Dragon Talk, the official Dungeons & Dragons podcast that frequently featured guests from throughout the D&D community. Notably, Tito's new boss, Steve Hobbs, is also a noted D&D fan and appeared on an episode of Dragon Talk back in 2019. Dragon Talk went on hiatus in July 2023.

It's just weird to me that a state would have its own Secretary of State, but that's because I'm Canadian and for us external affairs are almost exclusively managed by the federal government, while provinces have almost complete control over internal affairs.

Which is neither here nor there. I wish him well at his new job - interesting to go from messaging for a gaming company to messaging for a state!

Many states have mini-versions of fed departments even down to state investigation bureaus like the FBI. The Florida version is even named the FDLE to avoid confusion with the FBI.

I hope him good luck. Hopefully he is making decent money, but it also could be that he also had a desire to do something new or serve the public as well that led him to attaining the job.

I believe the position pays something between 90K-125K if I recall what was broadcast when they were looking for a similar position to fill in 2019.

Well Washington has payroll transparency on job postings so if they post his position easy to compare salaries.

A job with the state probably pays less in salary but comes with better benefits, pension, and security. Plus it's a government job so no real pressure to perform.
