"Greyhawk Classics" novels

I did like the inclusion of a river boat casino in one of the books.

I would have been a lot more forgiving if the books had not been foisted on my favorite campaign setting, and if they didn't basically waste such iconic D&D locations and characters.

I can remember seriously not liking the Giants novel. Half of it was set in the Hill giant steading, then the book rushed through the Frost and Fire giant homes. The whole 'it's the drow behind it all!' surprise idea was given away right near the beginning because one of the characters just 'happened' to know who Eclavdra was. Plus, IIRC, the frost giant king was put down by a Sleep spell (!).

I am amazed that Eric M is the only poster so far who didn't like the Paul Kidd books. I remember at the time feeling like I was the only one who DID like them. I'm glad to know that there are others!

I do see Eric's point though, even thought I loved them, if seeing the stories made in a less than serious manner would offend you, then these would not be to your liking at all.

I think the stories have a lot of imagination. It would certainly never occur to me to use a wax job as a gate key for getting to another plane! :)

You can add me to that list as well. I found the Paul Kidd books to be odious. They had no reverence or respect for the source material. Moreover, I did not find the characters endearing or charming either, particularly the so called "comic relief".

I would never have guessed that from your name and avatar! Right now though I guess you just want to to do what the "S" stands for in your name?

I think that's the one I didn't like either.

Was it the one that was just bone-grindingly grim?

Blackadder: Right. Now all we have to do is fill in this MP application form. "Name"...
Baldrick. First name? Er... I'm not sure.
Blackadder: Well, you must have some idea.
Baldrick: Well, it might be Sod Off.
Blackadder: What?
Baldrick: Well, when I was little and I used to play in the gutter, I used to say to the other snipes "Hello, my name's Baldrick." And they'd say "Yes we know. Sod off, Baldrick."

I read one or two of the books; they were amusing, but in sort of the same ways as KoDT. It was like a novel of a ridiculous campaign, full of silly PCs performing sensationally ridiculous actions.

IIRC, they defeat Lolth by dropping her in a portable hole of holy water. The Frog brothers (of Santa Carla, CA) would be proud. :)
