There was tension between them. It wasn't malevolent or oppressive, but it was palpable. Kleborn's father wanted a sea-faring life for his son. Kleborn loved the sea and respected it, but it wasn't his soul. The elder Northman didn't agree, and he pressed the issue on a number of occasions, particularly after a night in port, drinking savage bitterroot ale. Respen had been a gracious passenger, and he had carried his weight on deck, at least when the ocean was calm. Kleborn's father was more patient with Respen's nausea in rough water than Kleborn's aspiration to adventuring on land. Respen had travelled for a time with a Bixby Cobblegood, an entertaining </p><p>portly wiseass of a Halfling who would most assuredly find his way as a smuggler, if he didn't find himself dead first. Respen had met the Halfling leaving Erypt, and they both secured passage on Kleborn's father's ship. Bixby had ripped off an Eryptian mages' guild that had indentured him as 'an acquirer and purveyor of rare items'. He made off with a Baker's dozen magic items, and two chests of gems, fine silk, and enough gold to more than secure his place on the Northman's ship. Kleborn, Respen, and Bixby had shared many nights on the sea smoking their pipes, with Respen and Bixby regaling Kleborn their pasts, and Kleborn explaining his world on the sea with the Northmen. Once separated west of the Pomarj, he hadn't seen either one until now. </p><p></p><p>He spends a few minutes bringing Kleborn up to speed, explaining that time, and particularly daylight, might indeed be very important right now. He asks Kleborn how he had fallen into the well. Had he tried to jump?</p></blockquote><p></p>
