I provides a good intro to the setting, esp. from the POV of Gygax's novels.

Tons of stuff (including quiet a bit by your's truly) to get you into the setting. Just keep in mind that (unless you happen to be one of my players) a lot of the material is not 'canon' as they say, and therefore your DM might not use it.
On the other hand, you'll get material from guys like Erik Mona, Gary Holian, and Rob Kuntz, all of whom have or have had a hand in developing the official setting.
