If you were subbing non-lethal damage for ability damage, would casters with the magical adept talent still get to subtract their spellcasting stat from the damage they take?

If you were subbing non-lethal damage for ability damage, would casters with the magical adept talent still get to subtract their spellcasting stat from the damage they take?

I'm still sorting it out, but I am happy to share where I am leaning:

Give the caster a "mana buffer" equal to their stat bonus x their level. Non-lethal damage comes off this "mana buffer" first.
