[Grim Tales] XP d20 compatible?

In the Grim Tales book (which I just happily received yesterday), I saw mention of Experience points in the first few pages.

I thought any mention of XP was forbidden within the context of the d20 license? I mean, XP isn't listed in the SRD.

Am I wrong?

The d20 STL explicitly states that it does not preclude creating an experience chart.

It does preclude detailing (a) certain aspects of character creation, such as generation of ability scores; and (b) a description of how to apply the effects of experience.

Obviously it's not true that "XP isn't listed in the SRD." Off the top of my head, in item creation and spellcasting.

I hope you're enjoying the book!

Interesting. So that's it, you just can't create an XP chart? That's weird.

Well, true I suppose. though it's kind of ancillary...

Oh yes, thank you. It seems quite good. I'll know more this weekend to see how badly the DM in our game screws over my cloistered cleric. :) We're switching over to Grim Tales.

No, it means you CAN create an XP chart, you just can't really explain what to do with it.

I think most gamers know what to do with it, though-- so I guess, honestly, it would have been simpler for them to say that a covered work could not include an XP chart. I dunno. <shrug>

I'm happy to live with the d20 license, and I make no bones about recommending one or more core book purchases with Grim Tales. I think you need the core books. Frankly, as a companion to Grim Tales, I think folks are more likely to buy the core books for the Equipment charts, or the spells, than they are how to generate ability scores or apply the effects of experience.

The d20STL can enforce whatever restrictions they want. They could say you couldn't use the word "Belgium" in a covered work, if they wanted to, and if you wanted to use the d20 logo, well, so much for "The d20 Hitchhiker's Guide to the Foulest Words in the Galaxy"
