Grumpy RPG Reviews: Dungeons and Dragons Cartoon, Part 1

It's tough to do reviews and take something on its own terms and as a product of its times.

Thank you for your comments. I know it can be tricky to study something out of context, but a lot modern analysis does on like this, looking at something through modern eyes. While there is a maturation in animation titles, this show has aged fairly well because it avoided trapping of them contemporary America. There has been a shift in how characters are used - compare and contract Eric from the D&D Cartoon to Saka from Avatar:tLAB, for example. The only part which really bugged me was the sexualizing of 14 year old girls.

Episode 35 - Villains of the Dungeons and Dragons Cartoon

  • What do the villains say about Hollywood Land thinking in 1980?
  • The Orcs (and bullywugs and lizard men by extension)
  • Nightwalker (which I mistakenly call Nightstalker)
  • Kelek
  • Acererak says he and Kelek were on the same bowling team.
  • Warduke
  • Acererak says Warduke spent most of money on body oil to make his muscles shinny.
  • Shadow Demon
  • Kareena, Venger's Sister
  • Venger
  • Venger and the Evil Overlord List.
  • The Dungeon Master (yes, he is on the villains list)
  • An answer to the question, "What do the villains say about Hollywood Land thinking in 1980?"
Two episodes to go and this series of video reviews wraps up.

I am not normally one for fan fic, but I began wondering about a team up between Venger, Megatron, Cobra Commander and possibly Skelitor. The cheese, it would be glorious.
