I run a 4e campaign for my wife and son, and one of the suggestions I received on these boards for making a TPK less likely was to let them have pets.
I asked her what type of pet she prefers, and she mentioned cats. Since her character is a ranger, my thoughts went to Drizzt and Guenhwyvar, and I figured why not? It's not an original thought, but as someone once said, a DM's job is not to be original, it's to entertain, and she's never read anything about Drizzt anyway, so the idea of a ranger with a magical panther companion is new to her.
So I statted Guenhwyvar up as an artifact. I think it fits nicely as she was originally a Figurine of Wondrous Power. Here it is, and the blink dog pet I've statted for my son. The blink dog stats I derived from the Shadow Hound entry in the MM.
